Marilyn, check with your doctor, they get some types of medicine in styrofoam boxes. Or your local hospital, grocery store?

I got my styrofoam containers out of a grocers trash. Most the time fish comes in them and some I just won't touch they smell so bad. Just have to wash them out with the hose and then they are fine. I think I will ask at the hospital and see if I can get some smaller ones.

Yes my pet store have a lot. I have gotten some free from them just for asking. They are large and thick make good study pots.

My main purpose when I started this was to keep styro out of our landfill. But if you want to buy a box. They sell them at Dollar Generals stores, I see them at Family Dollar, and those One Dollar store.

Look around the summer paper plates and plastic fork area. they sell them for people to take food on picnics, and carry ice.

Although it is cheaper and more environment efficient if you can get your box free since you are in the dollar store you can pick up some decorative rocks and stones. If wood is your choice they have some nice wood pieces you could cover your box with wood and stain.

Either way buying the stuff to make the pots are still cheaper than if you purchased a pot from Lowes.

A lot of good places to look for the containers. I saw a couple in the thrift store a few months ago and they put a $2.92 price tag on them. Well, of course they didn't sell. I'll bet they ended up in the trash can. I've been collecting stones and the glass globs when I would find a good sale for a long time, I know I have planty on hand to make some pots.

Next year I will be doing all my veggie gardening in containers and this just gave me another type of container to use. I'll have to keep my eyes open for them.

If there's anyone in the Denver area who wants to try their hand on making styrofoam troughs, contact me. I have at least 6 of my large, thick walled drug boxes that make great containers and I want to get rid of them. I'd rather they were put to a good use rather than just thrown out.

You have the knack of truly making them look like stone. And not just in your photos. I was amazed at them when I visited your place. Wonder if Marilyn knows you have extras?

Tabby,

I would love to have 2 or 3 of these and would be glad to meet you at Timberline, I have been thinking about going out and
browsing their containers anyway.

When the weather clears a little bit in a couple of days if you would like, let me know if you still have them and we can set a time.

I have been asking in stores and pharmacies and fish markets and those I checked were not using the foam ones.

I just noticed this thread. I think I'll make some styrofoam planters. I think I will carve out some holes in the sides of mine kind of like a strawberry jar. I plan on putting semps and sedums in the holes too. I have so many ideas for these now. Maybe you could make some and spray them with glue and sprinkle sand on the sides to make them look more natural too. You could also carve patterns into them with a nail. I think a round styrofoam ball could be dug into to make a quick ball of Semps too. Hmmmm.
