Funny thing is that it is not coming back from seed, but from the roots. And each year the plant gets larger. I can lift the edge of the container and see where the plant is rooted in.

and odd that it took that long to come back from roots, huh? hmmmm.....

Our nights stay pretty cool, even in the 80 & 90° weather, I think that is why it takes so long for it to grow out from under the container. Come freezing weather the entire plant disappears, until the next summer.

I have a question. It was many years ago that I had portulaca in that container. Does this type of plant start from cuttings, or just seed?

Cuttings will work (for the ones I've tried, P. grandiflora, umbraticola, amilis, pilosa.)

I had a beautiful hanging basket of the purslane last year. I was hoping that this summer they would re-bloom, but they did not. The nice thing is that they are inexpensive so I got another basket this summer. I am in south fla with hot and humid conditions. Could it be that it's just too hot down here for them to come back a year later?

Becky is in Phoenix and it gets much hotter there than Florida however I don't think she has the humidity you do. Not sure if that's the issue or not.

Yes, I live in Phoenix and purslane loves the heat. It also loves the sun and not shade though. I discovered this when I placed some purslane facing east and it didn't get all day sun.

It's really an annual but many of us are fortunate in pushing it to keep growing another season. As for me, I've never had a basket last more than a full year cycle but it does show up in the ground sometimes for years.

P. umbraticola is not an annual.
