Michele, the plant I got came from Tennessee.
I have received plants with cut off scapes before, and there was always some green indicating they were from the current season.
Trust me, the spent scapes that came in that order were from before any outside growing conditions would make them look like they did.
Which led me to believe they were from the greenhouse.
Like I said if I'm wrong I'm wrong, either way I'm not buying from him again.
I have been buying plants from numerous sellers since 1996, those scapes in that condition was a first for me

Oh I trust that this is the case I was just wanting to explain to Cat (since she is still new to daylilies) that this is not the case with all plants received with spent scapes. I have several I sent out that had spent, brown scapes on them and I don't have a greenhouse.

I'm sorry Michele, I reread your post and see that I should of read it a little slower the first time.

Cat I want to tell you that the majority of all sellers from my experience is nothing but positive.
Even the plant I got though not what was hoped will be good to go by the next season, so life is good.

Got some plants the end of Feb from a NC seller and the fans were small, although I didn't know then what good fans should look like, I left positive feedback.

Now all these plants from that seller have rust. We had weather here recently that was great to bring out any rust. Don't know why it didn't come out earlier or if rust was otherwise introduced to my farm, why these NC plants the only ones majorly showing it?

These plants are the only ones with the rust bumps. A few other plants in the area show only very, very tiny slight or mostly no rust at all.

Those fans may be the normal size from a NC garden. It gets pretty cold there and to be shipped in February I would expect them to be extremely small from a garden there. Shoot my plants weren't even ready to ship in February; I couldn't ship until April and a lot were still small even then.

On the rust issue, they may have already been infected with rust before you got them. Without getting technical, you have to remember that rust starts inside the plant so it will lay in wait until the right conditions present themselves for it to show itself. If the plants already had the rust fungus lurking inside then your "weather here recently that was great to bring out any rust" brought out the rust. So if they were already infected and your other plants are not then that is why they are the only ones majorly showing it.

I am glad Michele explained the difference. I felt like I got cheated out of the first scape when they arrived but if it is because of the earlier growing season then that is just what it is. They were brown and that part of the plant did not look so good. I must say, I ordered/bid on plants from a few different claimants (mostly tried to stay in my zone if possible) some came from NC and FL but the difference in the type of plants you receive is really crazy! There are some I won on LA that were fairly new but what I received for the $ almost made me sick. Super small single dried looking fan (if that is really what you could call them). Those sellers are on my Black List now and I don't think I would buy from them again no matter what they have. Thumbs down

I found rust today on a couple of new plants from a pretty big name seller. We've had plenty of weather that would allow rust to take hold (I was pretty happy I hadn't seen it thinking I might be in the clear this year... Glare ) It's very likely, given what's known about truly killing rust within plant tissue, that the plants arrived with latent rust. There is not a lot a seller can do if they spray to control rust and do not see any.

Very true James as most bigger sellers do spray (and have to) so they may never see the rust. I have received plants from northern gardens that say they have never had rust and those plants are the first to break out once they get to my climate. They have not had time to get infected here so I know that the plants were already infected with it but the seller did not have the right conditions for it to show up.

I saw a LA seller that charges $10 for shipping but $5 for each additional plant. Blinking That seems a little high to me. To anyone else?

Cat, $10 for the initial shipping isn't all that high given what shipping costs actually are.
$5.00 for each additional does seem high; however, sellers can charge what they want.
Just be careful to note these charges before you bid or buy.

One grower charges $20.00 which to me seems high, but I've never ordered from them.
Extra large fans may require more shipping cost.

I ship other merchandise via priority mail and long for the days when the base cost was just $4.95.

I'm not sure who the seller is you are referring to but there is one that if you do not read the entire description the seller has and just skim over it you will come across the $10 plus $5 additional plant and think that is his shipping rate, but this is for the international buyers; his in states shipping is $10 plus $3.

The extra $5 may not be much depending on what you are buying. If it's SFs or DFs then yes it is high, but if it's bigger plants then it may need to be higher. I have shipped out DF and TF plants before that almost take up the whole large priority box for one plant because of the root systems being so big.

I charge $10 plus $3 and there have been lots of times I end up in the hole when shipping because I have the regular shipping rate and then I have two different rate increases depending on where I ship. There are plenty I pay less for shipping so it all evens out in the end.

I know you can end up in the hole because I did recently. I change $8 shipping and $1 per extra. May have to increase that a bit. But, the farther you ship, the more they charge. I shipped 2 plants to Montana recently and charged the customer $8 and the postage ended up being $11. They were spiders and you know spiders are smaller plants so I thought that $11 was pretty high. If I would have sent that same package to a state in close proximity to me, it would have been about $6.

Hello Folks,

I'm completely new here on ATP, so I hope this works.

I've been following this thread for a long time lurking around on the net. I found it useful and wanted to provide my experience with LA Sellers. Those were:

mljomo - ordered 4 plants
Abundantdaylilis - ordered 4 plants
Blueridge - ordered 7 plants

All the plants were exactly what I ordered plus some extra fans on a couple. All the plants were in great condition when they were shipped to me. There were bonus plants in addition to extra fans in the orders. I'm in Texas, and the costs I paid for shipping came very close to the actual cost it took to get them here by USPS. I figure with the time, labor and packaging the suppliers broke even probably. I hope :). Some of the plants from Florida arrived with a scape showing. On one plant none of those managed to develop. Two others put up scapes from other fans that have gone on to bloom. Mostly all the plants have done well and most have bloomed or are showing scapes now.
A couple have thrown tantrums before they started growing, but those tantrums weren't due to the quality of the plant when it arrived. I am pleased with my experience and would order from these suppliers again without hesitation.
