More Concrete Hardscaping for the Garden

By beckygardener

Concrete is my favorite medium to work with for hardscape structures. I look at concrete in various forms and try to figure out ways to use them in my garden. This is my latest idea.

I love the pavers! What a great idea! This past summer I, also, built a 10 x 10' keyhole raised bed and I love it! I scrounged the neighbors and found several large logs, rocks and bricks. I cut the logs to fit then filled in the short spaces with large rocks (the logs weren't quite 10' long). I used the bricks for a mow strip. Yes, a couple places needed a good stretch to reach but I solved the problem with a 2 x 10 that I rested across the bed and used as a kneeler.

I know the logs wont last forever but by the time they need replacing I'll have the time, money and plans to make something more permanent. I hope! I'm in my late 60's so I might not need to do anything. LOL

Here's a pic just before I laid down the mulch.

Meri - Your keyhole garden is lovely! Hurray! Thumbs up

I do like the look of wood, but it doesn't last here. You'll have to share a photo come Spring of your adorable garden! Smiling

Thanks Becky. Is it the humidity that tears up the wood?

It'll only be the 2nd year for the plants in the keyhole so I'm not expecting much. As long as they live through the winter. I have a couple z5 Lavenders in there and right now they're buried under a foot of leaf mulch. I hope its enough. I also have a Clematis, Lilies, Astilbe, Primrose, a couple different Coneflowers, Galardia, Salvia, 2 types of Stonecrop, and some Dianthus in the garden. Those are just the perennials, I had a bunch of annuals too. The trellis is a crib head board I found in the towns burn pile and rebuilt for the Clematis.

I see you like Daylilies too. I moved out of a house last year in Minnesota that had 25 different varieties of Daylilies. I hated to leave them but I moved late winter and the Daylilies weren't accessible. I e-mailed the new owners and asked if he'd share one with me. He very graciously said yes! I ended up with 10 plants from the old house! I can't wait for next year! Hoping to see which ones they are.

I love your crib trellis! I think with all the plants you have in that bed, it will look wonderful come Spring/Summer.

That was very nice of the new owner of your old house to let you take 10 daylily plants! You are very lucky to have gotten that deal. Hurray!
