Are you sure about the ID of this plant? It looks unlike the Opuntia littoralis plants which grow around here (plant is native to the region, named after the coast here) or the plants in the other photos. The color is different, the proportions of the pads are different, and the spines are different (mostly absent, both the proper ones and especially the glochids which are so evident on this plant normally). Since it's growing on another continent there is a good chance the tag was mixed up.

I could not begin to say which Opuntia it might be, so the best I might recommend would be to move it to the generic Opuntia page, unless you know the ID to be correct or have some idea what it might be otherwise. Please let me know what you think.

This process is a little frustrating for me when people do not even have the time for two words, after I politely ask for the favor of a reply. Not just this once, it's true about half the time I ask ID questions. Apparently people are too busy to respond to someone who has taken the time to study their images and try to figure out where they best fit in. In some cases you have intervened, Sue, and I am grateful for that.

Often some folks rarely check in here, not like us regulars or they add a few photos and then never came back so you may never get a reply. I try to cruise certain forums often to see if any need help. Also, admin, like myself and Robert, have busy lives and we only do this on a volunteer basis so we may miss a lot on here.

When I request the favor of a reply, it is impolite not to respect that. I too am busy and a volunteer. I have a sense that you, Sue, do understand the dynamic because it is often because you make the effort to bring the contributor to the table so that they show up to comment.

I would like to apologize publicly to Robert for calling him out so soon after the original post. That was unnecessary and I realize I need to be more patient in the future. I should have waited several more days.

It's all good...just been a very busy couple days with the big blizzard that just rolled through...I've worked 34 hours in the last 48. I will always get around to reply, it sometimes just takes a couple days, especially when I'm running on fumes and Mountain Dew.

It looks like Opuntia quitensis - Red Buttons Prickly Pear.

I would like to take this moment to question the habit of (and the NGA allowing) posting wikipedia and other common use sourced photos in the plant database without actually being certain that the given ID of the plant in that photo is correct. As we all know there is a lot of incorrect information out there, even if it was posted with the best intentions. Identifying a plant from just a photo is not always easy, especially with some plants when small harder to spot differences are what might distinguish them.

Errors happen, among members that join and add their photos here to the photos added from vendors, nurseries and botanical gardens and there are mistakes there too. We appreciate any and all input to make corrections. It helps us all to take note of the details and we all learn from it.

Along the same lines, I would like to question the decision involved in prioritizing that photo for default display above the others of Opuntia littoralis (the real species) with more thumbs, from actual habitat, and with clear features better matching the species. Or do I remember the order of the pictures wrong? Things have changed there now so there's no way to know any more.

Who decides what shows up on the species page? Why was the wrong photo selected instead of allowing the thumbs to decide? It's not a huge deal, obviously all resolved now, thank you. I'm just trying to understand the hidden mechanisms at play.

The thumbs-up should trump all. I didn't notice it either but the moved photo doesn't have any thumbs on it. (those transfer over with a move)
Early in the database development, admin had an option to 'lock in' an image as primary thumbnail, only used on occasion for various reasons, for example; designating a bloom shot over a stem or leaves. Prettier in the database listings! Once more images got added and members then had the new ability to add thumb-ups, we removed those locked in images as we came across them or someone brought it to our attention. That may have been the case for that image, not sure though since it's been moved.
