WOW. July, and still not out?
And you are in zone 9b?
If I get some, they will come to life around September and bloom in December?

I am not sure Calin..I think because of our dry spring and an even drier and hotter summer my Eucomis does not want to bloom. Maybe you will have better luck with it. I hope jmorth can help you out too.

(check in database)
All of my Pineapple lilies are grown in pots a/o large containers. They receive full sun at least half a day. These containers are overwintered dry in their pots in the basement. Sometimes they get re-potted in the spring, sometimes not. Occasionally, and irregularily they get dosed w/ water soluble Miracle Aid fertilizer (20-20-20). They replicate fairly swiftly. Full sun for 2/3rds of the day, watered every day.

Thank you very much jmorth! My bulbs when I last checked it is at breaking dormancy phase but I have planted it quite deep. Ah, so I have to plant it like an amaryllis, very near the soil line..okay, gotta go out and pull it much higher..thanks again jmorth!

Woohoo! My hope is rekindled! I removed some of the soil, and I see the bulbs are really alive and really trying to grow! Hopefully I have done it just in time for the plants to catch up! So got to remember..plant not too deep, plant near the soil line.....might as well put it here in case I forget again for next year!!!
Luckily our temps today are not that hot, and we have delta breeze so it will be good for the plants!!

A very big thanks jmorth! Hurray!

Fantastic Pineapple Lilies everyone! I love them, have kept a few varieties going for several years now. They've been reliable performers with little care.

jmorth, Leia is the brightest color bloom I've ever seen on a Euchomis- gorgeous! Where did you find those?

Evan, I've had E.autumnalis overwinter in the ground here, but the next winter was more severe and I lost them. That was several years ago, and I'm considering trying some in the ground again- they've increased enough to experiment with a few. I'm encouraged to try again because I found volunteer seedlings this year! In 2 locations, where different varieties sat in their pots last year, there are baby Euchomis plants growing!

Neal, that's great news! I keep getting surprised by how resilient some "bulbs" can be. It's funny how perceptions change over time. I used to think winter mulching was a lot of work. It's easy and useful in the spring garden. It will be fun to see how long it takes for your seedlings to bloom.

Thumb of 2013-08-09/gemini_sage/627e8e These are my tall ones that I started from seed (5 years ago, I think). I need to do some research, as I've lost track of the species name. First blooms came last year (2 bulbs flowered last year), and 3 this year. The blooms range from cream to greenish, all with purple ovaries, and they're about 30" tall. The petals have great substance, and remain attractive throughout seed formation, which is why they were allowed to go to seed last year. The last pic is the volunteer seedlings.

Here is E.autumnalis this year, and the volunteer seedling. That single large leaf has me wondering if that seedling is on its 2nd year- I recall newly germinated seedlings having narrower leaves (but then again, it was another species I started from seed, so this may be typical of E.autumnalis).

New photo program I need to get used to- sorry for the pics needing rotating. I'm better with bulbs than technology, LOL!

Stunning bloom Neal and good neck exercise. Green Grin! You've pointed out one more step in the 12-step program, collect and sow seed.

Once the rain stops I'll snap a few of Crocosmia 'Lucifer'. The odd thing is this clump is from small bulbs planted 3 or 4 years ago and it's still in full swing. My other clump from potted plants (planted the following spring) started to peter out about 3 weeks ago. Shrug!

Has anyone had Lycoris squamigera bloom yet?
