Yep, these have been blooming for over a week. Come to think of it, the first blooms opened near the end of July.

Oh good grief! These pics aren't like this when I view them, even tried rotating them, then posting, but that didn't work. Gotta get a techie friend to figure it out, LOL.

They work well in a problem area with dry shade from deciduous trees. They get all the sun they need to bloom well before the trees leaf out, and are drought tolerant. The naked stems kinda bothers me, so my plan is to surround that clump with plain green Hostas that have showy spikes of lavender blooms in early summer. The seed pods in the pic are the Hosta I'm using. The Lycoris blooming will motivate me to remove the seed heads, LOL There is another nice clump of them in that bed, and a few random clusters here and there, and they do bring a nice breath of life to those areas at this time of year.

Evan, are you expecting blooms from Lycoris?

Evan, that has been my experience with Lycoris as well, they tend to sulk for a couple of years when they've been disturbed or are newly planted.

Jmorth, I love that you've captured the blue tips of the petals in that last pic! They always look to me like they've been watered with blue dye the way the blue is concentrated toward the edges. Makes me think some day hybridizers will come up with a blue variety.

Nice lilies... I got about 5 bulbs, but the soil is really bad. heat and drought in summer, but I still had one bloom. Like now.
Great Tarev. At least they do something now, and will soon bloom... i'm still thinking about getting into these or stick to what I already have Smiling

Adorable! I had a few bulbs that weren't in great shape, but still surviving, so I put them out around the edges of a plumeria pot this past spring. Pulled them out yesterday, and while they hadn't bloomed this summer, most had grown larger and/or multiplied! I'm assuming I should let them dry out, cut off leaves once they've died back, and keep them as I would a caladium bulb... or should I pot them up and put them in a sunny window for the winter?

I think you should probably store them dormant over winter. I keep mine in their pots stored dry in the basement.

I do the same way too, cutting off the dead leaves and keeping the bulbs in their container then I bring them out in late spring.

Thanks! I had considered keeping everything (plumeria & eucomis) in the pot and letting it dry out, but it was too big & too wet from recent rains for me to move! Maybe I'll pot them up in a small container of barely-moist mix so they go dormant more gradually.

No blooms on my eucomis yet... next year, I'll try to get them going ahead of time inside. Or maybe I'll drag the whole big pot inside, especially if the plumeria they live might bloom (I think I'm seeing buds on it, but maybe without enough time for flowers before frost).

Thanks to this guy
Thumb of 2014-09-02/jmorth/81caeb the flowering scape of my giant Eucomis got broken off and is now a specimen in water
Thumb of 2014-09-02/jmorth/542f6b

Plato got caught up in some morning glories growing up on part of an old TV antenna tower next to the Eucomis pot. When extracting myself from the rescue I inadvertently broke the flowering stem off..;

He does have baby blue eyes (more pics in the pets thread).
The flowering stem measures 2/3rds of an inch across. Original ht. of scape must have been about 3 ft. and it was still elongating.
