When I re-visit a discussion, I automatically arrive at the newest comment since my last visit. Priceless & awesome!

What if the pics above did not load unless/until one scrolled up there? One would not have to wait for them to load to read the new comment/see the new pics. If bandwidth is a concern at the administrative end, it would save a lot. I know you could do it if you think it would enhance the site to the point of being worth the time spent coding it. Either way, TYVM!!

It is just the modern day way of doing things, think back when you were young and you spoke a different language than your parents, slang today is just different. If I don't know what something stands for I look it up! People are in a hurry, it is the in thing to do. Ranting I don't think will change it,
Edited to add, this is a result of everyone using a smart phone and texting I believe, if I had to type on one of those I would use every shortcut I could also.
One more edit to add: A quick reference.

Phillip, I understand what Tiffany is talking about. I used to have dial up. What a pain it was to have to wait for things to slowly load before I could read the new posts. And for some it can be an expensive things if they have a certain amount of time allotted per month.
Lots of people use abbreviations in their post. I rarely know what they mean, I just read the parts I understand and go on. At my age I'm not sure I will gain the knowledge of all those abbreviations. Rolling on the floor laughing

LOL -- long, long ago - in a world far away (or so it seems)... when I had dialup (and Compuserve), and the worldwide web had not yet come into existence... I belonged to a "working from home" discussion group and had a program called "Tapcis" that would dial up, log in, retrieve current messages, and log off. Then I could read the messages off line, add any responses, and again let Tapcis do its thing and post my messages.

We've come a long, LONG way in not that long of time! Smiling

I understand what you feel Philip about the shortcuts...oh, years ago when texting is not yet big here in the US yet, but it is in full swing already in my homeland, I swear I thought they were cursing me the way they send a message to me. And I have to interpret it in either English, Filipino or combined...gave me a headache at times. Then I finally understood why they have to do it that way, got to maximize what they type on the phone so they can only get charged once for that particular text message.

But things have improved thankfully, with the introduction of other ways to send messages via social media. And I got to understand what they meant. Though I do admit, there will always be new expressions used, so I just gently ask them what they mean, and they gladly explain.

I'm old and I don't text but the abbreviations don't bother me ... they actually make me think and try to figure them out! If I can't figure them out ... I just ask. I am not technical and I don't understand the talk about computer bandwidth but I did know what Tiffany meant by TYVM because I just recently learned that it stands for - Thank you very much. Photos loading on this site or anywhere else has greatly improved on my side, when we changed our internet access to our provider's highest fiber internet plan. At first we were doubtful if it will truly deliver, but indeed, it was true. We don't do a lot of tv anyways, so we increased our internet access instead.

My wifi upload now averages 400 to 500 mbps and download at 300 to 400 mbps, higher if I am just the only one using our network, but when hubby is around then that is the typical speed I get. It would be much greater if I am wired connected can easily go 800 mbps, but I just go wifi downstairs. My hubby is the one on the wired connection since he plays video games a lot.

In our old internet plan, it will be lucky to go 50 mbps, and we get a lot of buffering when streaming. Now streaming is such a breeze!

Wow a lot of questions!

I'm quite happy with the speed of my computer & internet connection, and I was not complaining, just suggesting a way to not load anything unnecessary when people check updates to a discussion. I'm confident Dave understood it. If the idea is unappealing to the owner of the site, that's fine. Not all suggestions could possibly be practical from behind the scenes. It's not something anyone would notice using the site unless they noticed pages on the site were loading more quickly.

My available time to spend on the internet is finite, as it is for all people who have families, jobs, plants, any other aspects of their lives. Seconds add up.

IDK (I don't know) from where any particular abbreviations come. There were a bunch of them in this book from 1980:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...

Since the days of dial-up, Win 95, they've always been a part of chatting on the internet, on AOL, mIRC. There's LOL (laughing out loud) and so many others. I do not use them to save time, I type 120 wpm (words per minute,) but because I like them and if anyone does not know what they are already, they should be able to look them up, like a previously unseen word. I look up words I do not know as often as I see them, as I have my whole life. If someone says something I do not understand, it is not a mistake on their part, it is an opportunity for me to learn something. I can ask them to clarify, or look it up in a dictionary.

I have no idea what people do with phones besides make calls and send the occasional text like "Foot Locker" to find each other at the mall. LMBO! (laughing my butt off) The screen is so small, I would just be internet-free if that was my only option.

It's a nice idea but not really feasible for entirely technical reasons. Thanks for suggesting it, though!

Philip, I think it depends how one uses the technology, and who you use it with. If I know I am talking to my younger relatives or to people of my age bracket, texting or chatting is the way to go. For my older relatives, we still go live calling. Life with its various conveniences have made as all busier than ever.

My aunt used to abhor texting, but when I finally taught her how to use it, she enjoyed it a lot, especially being able to send /receive picture messages. And she is now 83 years old, so there is always room to enjoy things. She is not a heavy user, but it is convenience enough for her as well to reach all of us, even a casual text hello. Texting is her limit though, she will not use other forms of social media communication, so we are okay with it. Smiling

TY for your wise consideration, Dave. :)

Philip, I totally understand and sympathize with your rant about texting, a thing which I don't really do. Why your perfectly good rant is misplaced, downright hidden, in this discussion is a mystery to me. It deserves a life of its' own.

Have a great day!
