SpringColor - if you can find a "Gold Coin" pine or a "Wintergold Mugo" pine, those are smaller "shrubby" looking evergreens that don't get that big. I think Mugo gets onlike 2-4' tall after like 20 years.. more of a groundcover than a "tree". "Gold Coin" also stays pretty gosh-darned small.. I think it'll top off at like 6' but is VERY bushy & squat. Both are green in the late spring/summer/fall, but turn a brilliant yellow in the winter.

Yes, we used Mugo pines for groundcover in CA. They are neat little pines, IMHO.
I garden for the pollinators.

Mugo come in many sizes. Our largest is 6'Hx10'W (30 yrs. old) with yearly pruning. This is simply cutting or twisting off the new growth on top. They'll get 12 to 15'H though. Plenty of old and new cultivars though that are smaller only reaching the height Toni's talking about. I have one 30 year old that's about 30"Hx5'W without pruning. One of my favorite "dwarves".

Here's some dogwood up at Smith College. Bloodtwig Dogwood (Cornus sanguinea 'Winter Beauty')

I finally got some pics of my two gold pines up. Smiling The Wate's Gold isn't turning that brilliant yet.. hasn't been cold enough long enough (sure, we have days in the 20s, but then it shoots back up into the 50s.. weird winter). But the Hillside Gold is pretty nice. Smiling

We definitely had night temps in the single digits by then, so maybe the brighter yellow color fits.
