This photo was taken by Oscar Rivera in July 2017 at the El Faro Lighthouse in Manzanillo in the neotropical zone of Mexico on the Pacific Ocean. It appears to be quite small, possibly pygmy, possibly a juvenile.

I know there are people here knowledgeable about birds, so after 2 hours of searching to make a match, i am turning to you, although not as a last resort Hilarious! , to see what you can do to help id this little sweetie pie.

He or she is standing on a lighthouse walkway. The surroundings are water and also an amazing area of vegetation, part forest, part jungle and just about every kind of vegetation imaginable. The feathers appear somewhat wet which leads me to think he might have been fishing but that is conjecture. I would very much appreciate ideas, comments. Thank You!

Thank you so much @krobra Smiling The forum participants never cease to amaze me with their knowledge and resourcefulness. I am really delighted and now i can even listen for their call at night. I am quite sure it is one of your links. The Colima Pygmy Owl is well named. Colima is the name of the state where it was found. Although the Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl seems closer in appearance and description. Still, i think the id photo is not sufficiently clear to be certain but i am happy to get this close.

Thank you @plantladylin for your research, it is much appreciated Smiling I know so little about owls and did not realize there are so many brightly colored ones. Such good photos! Now i think my job is to keep a look out to see if i can manage to get a better photo for id. I'm guessing it may be awhile Rolling my eyes. . I did not know there were such adorable owls hidden in the vegetation and near dark.
