I have several Mahieus and most of them have small fans. I use a slow release fertilizer and use compost. They are like small folks God just made them that way :)

I have also won plants from FL growers and the second year they go back to normal size geez!

Everyone have a good weekend, I hope to get quite a bit done between rains and going to the ck on sick family members.

And, those huge leek size fans from the south make our Northern grown fans look anaemic.

I don't think the big fans make the northern grown ones look sick. I think healthy doesn't depend on size and healthy is what we all want most. I love the great big fans and strive to get mine to grow as big as nature will allow. But, just because some are big doesn't mean the smaller ones are bad. I judge a fan more by the roots and the condition of the leaves, even if the leaves are cut short it's easy to tell if they are healthy. So, don't fret over your northern plants not being as big. I'll love them all as long as they are healthy.

I got in another order today. I was in the middle of fertilizing my field of pots and didn't think to take pictures. I do have a question?? This package came about 600 miles but took 4 days. It was shipped priority mail. For some reason, I thought priority mail was around 2 days?? How long is it taking your packages???

Blessings, Mona

Mona: They say 2-3 days for priority, however it depends on how many sort facilities it has to go through and how close those facilities are to each other before it gets to its destination. Most of mine have arrived in 2 days that I have sent out. It took 5 days for Betty to get her package from me (it went through 6 different sort facilities). I sent one to the same state as me and it took 3 days (4 different sort facilities). Last fall I sent one out to California and for some reason it went to California (somewhere) then went to Canada then back to its destination in Calafornia.

Mona,

Last year I sent a few gifts priority to California, it took 2 days. I also sent some Daylillies to Illinois for a trade. It took a week! Seems instead of going to Chicago and then out through Illinois it went to Chicago, Then to Iowa then back to Illinois????? Made zero sense to me, but that is what it did when I tracked it. this is why I always spend that little extra to get delivery confirmation. Then I can see where in the devil the Postal service has it. Also had one destined for Missouri end up in Massachusetts???? then down to Missouri. ??? And the postal service wonders why it is in financial trouble Blinking BTW For reference I'm just north of Baltimore,MD.

Things are only going to get worse with the postal system. They are thinking about closing on Saturdays which is ok with me on that one.

My daughter sent four priority boxes to me from Hawaii (filled with twinkle lights from the family wedding at her place a couple of months ago) so the local high school could use them for prom decorations. That same day she also sent me a St Patrick's Day card.

I received the 4 boxes of twinkle lights about 3 days earlier than I got the card. Now explain THAT!!!! ~Jan

I have no problem with the Saturday closing either. I think it would save bunches of money and really, in our area, we have 3 post offices within a ten mile zone. These are very small towns and I think one should be closed. It would be the one in our town since we're in the middle. Putting it with the bigger(new post office) just 5 miles south of us would save a little money and if they did this nation wide it would save millions. You know, if we can see this, the people that run this system must be totally (well I want to say dumb but that's just not nice) irresponsible.

Oh well, I've solved the PO problems in less than 5 minutes, so now to go solve some of mine Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

Speaking of Leek size Fans and roots. I find it hard to make a large enough hole or large enough pot to put them in. Also takes a larger shipping box./ Large isn't always good in that respect and if they are hea;thy and large enough to settle in I think that is most important. It is wonderful to see the huge things though and look at them in awe.

Just to add, I have recieved huge and average fans and the average bloom as easily as the huge.

I was working on getting pots fertilized again today. After I got as many done as my body would allow, I had to water all of them in. I did 135 pots today. So, after getting those watered, I went to water some of the others that had been done in the past few weeks. I found 2 scapes on Red Cloud Mesa. I hadd 2 xlg fans last fall when i repotted it and now I have 10 fans and 2 scapes Smiling It's one of my established hybrids that was repotted last Fall. I have 2 scapes in March!!! I may have blooms in April from my plants, not the new ones that I'm getting in or got in last Fall. I don't count those but I sure do enjoy them. I know that they can bloom early since they have come from warmer regions.

I'm really looking forward to blooms, early blooms or late blooms. My only problem is, I don't have time to get everything done that needs doing. I've worked really hard since I started the season last March 2011. I didn't stop repotting until November 11 and then I had to start getting things ready for the holidays. I started cleaning out my greenhouse the week after Christmas and i haven't stopped since. You know, this coul;d be considered work Confused Confused , yeap I'm confused, I'm not supposed to be working. But, it sure can be fun!!!

I'm quite sure ya'll know exactly what I'm talking about. Blessings, Mona

Hijack to the Post Office discussion:

I read that It is not that the post office doesn't want to close these little rural offices, but CONGRESS that is forcing them to be kept open - and to stay open on Saturdays.

The problem is that the Post Office is not subsidized any more, but the rules about what they are allowed to do, is controlled by congress.

Ok, back to our regularly scheduled thread.... ~Jan

I'm running far behind already and haven't even taken pictures of a few orders I received within the last couple of weeks from Fred (Spunky1), Robin at Earlybird, Lyle, and Mark at Abundant Daylilies. All were really wonderful plants and I couldn't be more pleased. And yesterday I finished transplanting the last of my seedlings into 4" pots. But now my irises are blooming, I'm still weeding and it's time to fertilize again. Oh yes, and I got an email that my order from James Hall is on its way, plus I believe Richard Akers is sending my SF of DENTAL ACADEMY this week -- Yippee!!! I REALLY REALLY wanted that one!

Betty, this is what I call "hurry up and catch up". With the season starting so early this year, I was behind and didn't even know it until the first of April. It was like someone woke me up and said "Surprise" you're behind again!!!! I thought I was being so good because I only took off from Nov 18 til December 26 this past season. So, I should be 3 months ahead, NO! Behind again. I'll not panic. It's a normal state for me.

Have fun and enjoy planting your new ones so you can have a good day! Mona
