heres the yellow dragonfruit(pitaya i think its called), same inside but i dont think its as sweet as the red. The spines are just brushed off and fall off easy, do the red have spines to start with also?

Those must be an Asian variety, really interesting. I've never seen one like that down here. We do have ones with a deep purple flesh most often seen in Central America and the white fleshed ones grown here in southern Mexico. Ours are in season now, I'm eating several a day. I'd love this time of year for the fruit salads alone!

I just went back and saw your question about spines. No, the red don't have spines, they have what looks like small leaves on the outside of the fruit but it is not sharp. They peel really easily, the peel just pulls away from the flesh. Now I see the yellow variety on that link you posted. The link also mentions the confusing naming of another cactus fruit that grows in the northern Mexico desert and is also called pitahaya, both pitahaya agria (sour) and pitahaya dulce (sweet). It's not related and doesn't look or taste like the what I consider the 'real' pitahaya but it can cause a lot of confusion when people move here from the desert areas.

No, Ernesto came ashore south of our beach condo, the only effects at our place were high waves and lots of seaweed and junk on the beach. At least, that's all we know about we haven't been over there yet. He then ran across the Yucatan peninsula south of the city we live in, Merida. We got one night of heavy rains, a big drop in temperatures (which was wonderful) and some wind that knocked over one of my plumerias on the roof. I have them tied to the wall with flex ties and the sun had weakened them. He went back out over the Gulf, got stronger, and slammed into the state of Veracruz or Tabasco. I've seen on the news that there has been some flooding and damage and might be more as he goes across the country. I wonder if he will live to hit the Pacific and grow again. That has happened in the past. Now we have Tropical Depression 7 coming in on the same line as Ernesto. Tis the season. It seems once the door opens and they start heading this way, they all come along the same track. Hopefully this one will also stay south of us.

It's the price we pay to live in paradise. Coming from California, I prefer hurricanes to earthquakes as they don't surprise you. I'm scared of tornados and snow, hurricanes and earthquakes are something I can handle. Rolling on the floor laughing

I am totally in agreement about preferring hurricanes, I like the fact that they announce their visit beforehand!
I am glad you have had no major damage.
I have always wanted to visit Merida. It'll happen one of these years.

Whoa! No, they don't. I actually thought they were a bit expensive but I feel better now Hilarious! Generally they are around 10 pesos each, which is about 75 cents these days. Yea, I'm feeling a LOT better about the price, I think I'll buy some today Thumbs up

I may go back and get one. If the seeds are that easy to grow, I could have more of them by next summer.
Bree, I think they're about the same price here...US $5. is same as AUS $4.75.

The seeds are easy to grow. I was told by a local that whenever I ate a particularly sweet pitahaya to take spoonful of the pulp and smear it on the base of my rock wall. I did that a couple times and have several vines coming from it. Part of the reason that works here is that they are ripe during our rainy season, if it doesn't rain often then I'd think you'd have to do a bit more.

Good advice. I'll try to plant a few in pots instead. We're definitely not in our rainy season!
