I got this from a nursery in Manitoba, and it's a Canadian prairie native. As we live on the cusp of the foothills, we're still considered prairies.
I grew it in Winnipeg, then in Calgary, now we're rural, and an hour NE of Calgary. This past summer it got some flower spikes on it, so I'm very happy. It's difficult to find here, but I got it through the same Native Prairie greenhouse I've dealt with before.

Never seen one before, very cool, looks like it gets pretty tall! Interesting flowers.

It's a bee bush, and it really doesn't get that tall - about 3 1/2 ft tall.
My original one get left out and died, so I bought a new baby in May 2017. It got some tiny spikes on it, but then it's only 1ft tall lol

I grew three Amorpha fruticosa from seed and they got to be 6-8 feet tall! They were very top heavy without many leaves on the bottom 3-4 feet. High winds and snow caused a lot of damage to one. I cut it down to the ground and it sent up new growth that was much shorter, bushier, and looked better. I think they might be like buddleia and benefit from regular hard pruning to stay shrubby. I've also found that they drops a lot of seed, so I get plenty of volunteers that I have to pull out when they're still small because they get a strong taproot quickly. Maybe nurseries sell cultivars that stay smaller or are sterile?

yes, rj - that's it.

Morgan - I never noticed mine set seed, in Manitoba or Alberta, but I don't think the Native Prairie greenhouse would sell sterile plants simply because they're trying to encourage the proliferation of native plants as opposed to non-native invasive plants. It's possible that mine didn't grow large because I was only in that location for 4 years after I bought it as a seedling, then lost it in the move. I'm starting fresh with another 1ft tall seedling as of May 2017.
Also, being a bee-bush is good for the bee population Thumbs up

I can't remember how long it took for mine to get that big. I think they can get up to twelve feet, so it's good to know that they can take a hard prune and bounce back. Maybe the height is also determined by the climate and soil. The bees sure do like them though and it's a host plant for the Silver-spotted Skipper butterfly among others which is why I have it. I haven't found any eggs on it yet though.

Skipper butterfly? I'm sure we don't have any of those up here. Hopefully butterflies will like my shrub. Bees do Thumbs up
