I don't remember the scented catalogs, but I didn't really start buying roses until 1984. Love, Honor, and Cherish came out in 1980. I was living in Piedmont before 1984 and grew very few roses because the wonderful Mediterranean climate there was perfect for tropicals. And frankly, I didn't do much gardening there because there were always so many other things going on in the Bay Area. I actually started gardening on a major scale when I moved up here because there was nothing else to do in Sebastopol.
