This has become one of my favorite annual flowers here in my zone. Gorgeous showy magenta blooms are long-lasting. The plant is a re-bloomer. It produces many seeds and the seeds are also edible as are the young leaves. The color remains good for a long time. The plant doesn't seem to be bothered by many pests or diseases.

I've grown 'Acropolis' for years and love it! I have it in a flower bed in the back yard, just past the patio, so I can see it when it's in bloom. It has a wonderfully spicy fragrance! The full flowers have red petals and look tropical! The flowers sort of look like gardenias!

I've loved the look of Acropolis ever since I saw the photo of the flower on the bulb package when I bought it. A wonderful Daffodil!

I've been growing Narcissus 'Geranium' for many years in my front flowerbed. As you can see from some of my photos, it spreads into a nice big area. The flowers are beautiful and very fragrant with a sweet smell! I always look forward to when they are blooming and have that wonderful fragrance! Charming and delightful! I love this variety!

By Marilyn on Sep 28, 2013 11:33 PM, concerning plant: Apple (Malus domestica 'Winesap')

This was one of the apple varieties my dad grew while my parents had their 5 acre property in OH. Tart, tasty and juicy! It kept well in the fridge for 2 to 3 months.

He'd make excellent applesauce that he shared in some containers with the family and Mom and Dad's friends at church. He'd freeze some containers and bring them out to my sister's house in KY for the Thanksgiving Day gathering and it tasted fresh and good.

As with all the plants that he grew for the many years they had their home on the property, he took very good care of the apple trees and they rewarded him with good fruit and some bumper crop years!

For many years, while my parents owned a home on 5 acres, my dad had apple trees that he grew and tended to. One of the varieties was 'Jonathan.' He'd take good care of them and watched them faithfully every season and took care of any problems that needed to be attended to. Some years he said he had bumper crops of apples!

He gave some of the apples to my siblings and me and to his friends at their church. Some of the apples he made into applesauce. He made applesauce with sugar, with sugar and cinnamon, and without sugar. All excellent versions!

By Newyorkrita on Sep 28, 2013 5:06 PM, concerning plant: English Laurel (Prunus laurocerasus 'Otto Luyken')

Otto Luyken is the only cherry laurel that I am growing in my yard. I like the fact that it forms a really nice, tight, totally evergreen hedge. This variety of cherry laurel does not get over three feet tall, so it was a very good choice for my front corner.

Merchant Marine is simply a stunning iris. Gosh, I love those blooms. Merchant Marine has such very ruffled, full flowers. A good grower with lots of bloom each season. I think it is my favorite iris.

I love this daffodil. Nice large flowers bloom on nicely tall strong scapes. I found Gigantic Star at Brent & Becky's Bulbs, so of course I had to order it. I'm glad that I did!

By Newyorkrita on Sep 28, 2013 4:08 PM, concerning plant: Serviceberry (Amelanchier alnifolia 'Regent')

I was fortunate to find small potted shrubs of Regent Serviceberries in a local nursery. Regent has really nice large berries and it sets a lot of fruit. A lot of fruit! You can eat the berries fresh or make jam, but I just leave mine for the backyard birds to eat.

Avalon has a white trumpet on a yellow background. Simply stunning daffodil flower. New for me this past spring as I only planted them last fall. I can see that Avalon is going to be a favorite.

By Newyorkrita on Sep 27, 2013 5:39 PM, concerning plant: Species Tulip (Tulipa humilis)

Tulip humilis is an early, very early blooming species tulip that is small and rather reminds one of a crocus bloom. They are the earliest tulips to bloom in my garden. There are some different clones in the humilis category, such as, for instance, humilis black base and humilis yellow base.

By Newyorkrita on Sep 27, 2013 4:57 PM, concerning plant: Alfalfa (Medicago sativa)

Alfalfa is commonly grown as hay to feed livestock, especially horses. It also makes a nice grazing meadow for horses. Personally, I think the blooms are pretty. Every once in a while I grow some alfalfa as an ornamental plant.

By Newyorkrita on Sep 27, 2013 4:28 PM, concerning plant: White Sweet Clover (Melilotus albus)

Sweet White Clover grows as an annual, but it is kind of weedy and suitable for a meadow. It is much too tall for the lawn and not really for the flower garden. Bees do like the flowers.

Red Clover is a common clover growing in meadows, along roadsides, or in ditches. It seems to like growing just about anywhere. The blooms are attractive to bees.
