We went to a carnivorous plant show yesterday..so many intriguing carnivores..and just got to bring home one.

So this one is labeled as Sarracenia psittacina. So as indicated this type needs rainwater for moisture..we don't have that so will make it sit on distilled water. And has to be grown on full sun...well, will see how it will grow with 4 hours of full sun and then part shade. I do enjoy looking at its blooms, like an inverted umbrella, and the succulent leaves that are colorful and veinous. Says it is okay to leave outdoors in winter..I like that! Expectation is it will go dormant by winter time but still needs to be moist. That will be good timing since winter is when the rains finally come here.

Oh, I like that one Tarev. I'm interested in the carnivorous plants but would need to find one that could survive in our heat and humidity. I noticed when I was googling for places to buy vanda orchids in Mexico City that one of the recommended stores also sells carnivorous plants. Maybe I will look for one too. I have no idea how I am going to get these plants safely on the plane and home but we'll see.

Well, the blooms on that one you got are really spectacular. They really are little upside down umbrellas. Do the bugs crawl (or fly) into those and drown? Nature is fascinating.

I think the blooms just help attract the insects, the leaves has a small opening right at the inner curve, and the rim has nectar where they get attracted and eventually slides down.

Hi Kara,

I got my plant during a garden show. I have seen online websites like californiacarnivores.com or carolina.com, see if they currently have them. Have not bought from them since I prefer to buy them at a nursery or during a garden show or during local plant society exhibits.

Just watching if this tiny insect crawling on the flower stem will be just a casual pollinator or today's meal ticket for the Sarracenia if it happens to go towards the pitchers: too bad I cannot wait that long for it to decide Hilarious!

Just a photo update of my Sarracenia psittacina...it has adjusted well in my garden:

But then, something is feasting on some of the pitchers...seems it does not matter if something gnawed on it..pouch still plump..maybe it was able to digest the insect afterwards Hilarious!

I'm wondering if anyone in northern parts has any experience with these carnivorous guys? I gather they need high humidity, so won't be windowsill plants. Although there are some that are hardy even here (one of our sisters is from Maine and saw a huge sheet of them growing in a wetland there) I'm hoping to learn how to grow some tropical ones indoors in a terrarium where we can enjoy them even during the winter...

Thank You! in advance for any help anyone can give me! I'm all ears! MR

Hi Mother Raphaela, as I understand it, some of the carnivores go into a natural hibernation during winter. So even in a terrarium some will naturally be not actively growing. But there are some types that are not affected by the seasons.

I found this website..it seems their instructions are easy to follow. You may want to read through and see if it is something doable for you. : http://www.stormthecastle.com/...

I think we can also ask @Gerris2 about growing carnivores, being in Delaware.
