I have a son who is a gardener who lives in Minnesota, Zone 5A. He's moving soon and his new property has alot more room for creating flower beds so I'm excited for him. He wants to plant a pink, double, very fragrant rose for his daughter Rosie and asked me what I would recommend. My first thought was an English rose however it doesn't have to be. I've been out of the rose buying mode for a long time now because I gave up on adding more roses due to my constant battle with Rose Chafers and Japanese Beetles. I'm not knowledgeable about the more current David Austin roses. What I have left are mostly early varieties from years ago. Of course looking for disease resistant and a good rebloomer. Must be light pink (non fading), Rosie's favorite color. It doesn't have to be a David Austin rose but he typically has the old fashioned, very fragrant, double blossoms I love.
Not wanting Hybrid Tea roses or climbers. Would appreciate recommendations. Smiling

Hi, Vicky! It's nice to hear from you. I'm sorry I can't help; my growing conditions are too different, but welcome back.

Hi Vicky,
I am in z5a WI and can tell you what pink roses I have in my garden. Some are just planted in the fall but they may give an idea of what grows here. I do mound mulch in the fall, but it's probably not necessary on many of the roses in my garden.

I seem to get some blackspot in the fall in my area. There isn't any rose that blackspots so badly that I've wanted to dig it out or that the plant defoliates. Happy Gardening!

I might also check out HighCountryRoses in CO and Freedom Garden in Ohio, both of which specialize in Z5 roses. An email or call will help you with your decisions. There are a few others, but these two have a huge selection. Im Z6 and those with no die back to --7F include Summer Romance Eglantyne, Pretty Jessica, Ballerina, WindChimes, Pink Pet, the above mentioned Quietmess, Aloha, Zaide and Jacque Cartier. The jury is still out on a few newer ones such a The Forever Rose and Moonlight in Paris. Hope this helps. Youve been given a good start above.😉

As I'm looking online I'm realizing alot of the roses I have are no longer in commerce.

Been doing searches for rose vendors. Boy, miss the days when we had sources like Pickerings in Canada. They had such a huge selection of roses. What's out there now (varieties) seems limited compared to years ago.

Vicky, almost all of my now ultra-rare out-of-commerce roses came from either Pickering or Vintage. Boy, were we ever spoiled back then! I miss them both so much.

Ya tell me about it! I was pretty shocked at the lack of inventory out there. I loved Pickerings huge inventory of especially antique roses! Many of my roses are out of commerce. I couldn't find hardly any antique, Rugosa, Explorer or Dr. Buck roses!
But in my web searches I found a vendor called Cornhill Nursey.
They had a decent selection of antique, rugosa, explorer etc.
Anyone know about this place?
I think I want to order a couple roses now!
I'm seriously thinking about covering them with fine mesh garden netting.

I ended up recommending Gertrude Jekyll and Septere'd Isle to my son since they've been around for a long time and are still being offered by David Austin.
Is anyone here into Austin roses?
I'd love to know which of the newer ones are popular and why.
Where'd all the rose geeks go??? Shrug!

The Austin roses are beautiful, but they don't do very well for me due to my rather minimal care. They seem to expect to be watered whereas the antiques muddle through on their own.

I've got several Austin's that are probably 10 years old or so, surviving my neglect.

Two other nurseries I like are Heirloom Roses (I've always had good roses from them) and the other is Garden Roses LLC, I have an order in with both. Garden Roses LLC is new and they have a lot of the older Austin's you mentioned you liked. Best of luck!
