Aloha,

Is there a string trimmer head that will let you adjust the height of the cut? I have centipede grass on a hilly area that I cannot use my mower. When I use the string trimmer I often cut the grass too short as I bottom out the bottom on the head. I would be interested in a head that has a taller bottom that would keep the string about 2 inches from the bottom.

I can't imagine why they would make such a product. You control the height of the cut by your up and down movement. That would be viewed as an easy task. There would not be a need for such a product.
Just how big is such an area?

Thanks for the quick reply. The area is about 2K feet - half flat and half sloped. I have tried to keep the strings 2" above but is just not something I am good at. The head will often get pulled down and created bald spots. If I had the luxury of laying the bottom of the trimmer head on the grass (2 inches away) I would not have to make any height adjustments.

But again, I can't imagine why a manufacturer would make such a product.

Maybe it falls to you to rig something up. For example, my long armed string trimmer comes with a strap that goes up and over my shoulder. This does help me to use that strap as a fulcrum point making it easier for me to keep the whole machine level.
Maybe if you did it in sections with significant rest breaks in between?

Have you looked into a brush hog wheeled vehicle like I have seen advertised on television. Maybe one of those could be set to cut at your desired height?

Welcome!

try working smaller areas - and taking less of a "swing" with the trimmer head ....

Ok thanks guys. I am rather impatient when I weedwhack. Faster is better than quality for me. That's why some type of spacer would be ideal for me but looks like i'm in the minority.

There is your problem in a nutshell.
Please forgive me for saying so but if speed is more important to you then quality, that's a 'you' problem.
You can't expect a manufacturer to make a product that protects your plants from you.

I actually find this an interesting question but for a different reason.

I use a rechargeable weed eater that is a bit heavier. I find it sometimes gets out of balance for me and scalps the grass.

Now I live in a rural area so am not particular about the appearance as the grass will grow out but I wonder if a set of wheels would support the weight and balance as well as allow it to cut evenly.
What got me to thinking about this was the edger has a support wheel that certainly makes it easier to maneuver. Thinking

I can certainly see where such an addition would be handy for some people. It seems maybe all that would be necessary would be an extension centered on the bottom of the spool, something like a 2" ball that would roll along. There is already that knob sticking out for tapping to extend the line, so it might be designed to just snap over that. Many people use a line trimmer for an edger, some prefer a guide while others are content to free hand it.

We obviously have different views of cutting grass in our yards. All I am looking for is a string head with a 2 inch space from the bottom of the head to the string. If they made such a device I would be able to rest the bottom of the string head on the ground and go about my business without having to hold the head above ground for 30 minutes estimating a 2" height.

Something like this might work for you? I found it searching for "string weeder attachment to keep it 2" from ground". It's probably brand specific, but for that big of an area, I'd probably get a new string trimmer that would accommodate it. I can fully understand needing something to make that job easier, just trimming my edges with a lightweight one my arms get tired and it invariably slips to gouge out spots.

Thanks you two! Now I need to figure the size of the head and angle. It stands to reason that this would be a marketable item as the population ages... Says she who is no longer a young thing. Whistling

Seems Ryobi makes one as well. There's definitely enough of a market for something like this.
