Paul, I thought of this thread when I was at a nursery yesterday. Is this the plant you are talking about? It doesn't look exactly like the pictures posted but I wasn't sure so I took some pics. Unfortunately, plants are rarely labeled at some nurseries here, so no clues there.

Jonna,
Your picture seems to be of a scindapsis/epipremnum, pehaps 'Pearls and Jade', and looks like it has the typical heart-shaped leaves of that genus. Colors are similar. The ficus I'm looking for has leaves that are about 1 1/2 inches long and about a 1/2 inchs wide. Foliage is almost paper-like. Stems are small and wirey, similar to other trailing/climbing ficus varieties (like the common F. pumila).
I do appreciate your sleuthing on my behalf! And who knows- someday, someone may find this plant after all!

I had a feeling the leaves were too wide, sorry. At least I don't have to figure out a way to get a cutting to TX Whistling

I will keep looking, and hopefully others will too and one day this will be one of those great stories told about ATP, how we tracked down a missing Ficus!

Yikes, Paul. We've got to give you an A for persistence, at least.

Maybe try posting on the Ask A Question forum, and the All Things Gardening forum, so more people will see your request?

There's a fairly small group of 'regulars' that haunt this forum. Others have a wider reader base.

Hi, I am in Brisbane Australia, so probably not a great help to you. Today we went looking for a suitable creeper to cover a large fence. We visited numerous nurserys and found nothing of use to us. However, one had a Gazebo that had a beautiful creeper covering it. I asked if they had it for sale and was told no. It was Ficus Sagittata Variegata and the guy said that I would struggle to find it anywhere. Apparently suppliers have stopped growing it here as well. This plant was a magnificent specimen. I may have to go back and ask if I can take some cuttings.

I have been searching the net to see if I can find it anywhere. That's how I came across this thread. No joy. Similar situation to the U.S. obviously.

Hi gopher, Welcome to All Things Plants!! I sure wish Ficus sagittata Variegata would become available again ... it's been many years since I've seen it offered at nurseries or garden centers.

If you do get a chance to go back I hope you will take a few photos to share so we can all Drooling over that lovely plant!

Some of us were talking about this plant on another thread awhile back: The thread "It takes a village to find a ficus...." in Ask a Question forum I think nurseries could make a lot of money if they'd offer it for sale again!

Must be a good reason why they're not, though Lin. We speculated up above as to why it would be unavailable, and a couple of answers were that it was disease prone, or that the variegation proved to be unstable i.e. it reverted to plain green too readily.

The fact that @gopher1964 found that one big specimen at a nursery is encouraging, though. I wonder if they re-start the plant at intervals to maintain its health and/or appearance. I agree Please take pictures to post if you go back, gopher?

Kurt,

Ficus elastica 'Doescheri' is an upright, variegated Ficus tree growing to 6 to 8 feet in height while Ficus sagittata 'Variegata' is a low growing, trailing vine.

ok, i searched by image and i can see it on lots of european sites. either people have it and show pics in forums or it's listed for sale commercially. see swiss, german, italian, czech, polish, russian and ukranian sites. some bot gardens. found a russian site where they do group orders from thailand for rare plants (it's on the available list). but of course, you can't get it from there...but it exists and people want it and have it too.
it is recommended as a landscape plant in hawaii though. so may be some it can be found in some nursery there?
i searched fl nursery plant finder too (plantant) - nobody lists it in either.
found a private czech ad - selling rooted nice plant (no takers, listed 1 year ago).
some sites refer to it as ficus variegata Vahl.
f .sagittata vahl is listed as common plant in swamp forests in singapore - but it's plain green.
saw lots of your posts asking about it too ;). it seems silly that you had it as a ground cover and now nobody has it at all. perhaps, it's still growing in smbody's private garden near-by?
native distribution listed: china, india, indochina, pacific islands, philippines, thailand, indonesia, etc.
now some random sites with pics of it:
http://www.hydrotip.de/ficus-s...
http://www.hydrotip.de/ficus-s...
pics of giant trailing specimens, small:
http://www.paisagismodigital.c...
nice write-up that lists the following syns:
Ficus compressicaulis, Ficus radicans, Ficus sagittata, Ficus sagittata 'Variegata', Variegated Rooting Fig
http://www.plantsrescue.com/ta...
it seems the imports are coming from thailand.
if you're completely obsessed (as you seem ;)) - i'd try to get 'plant import permit' (saw a post saying it's easy and cheap) and try to import it directly ...from thailand. if russians can locate it, perhaps it can be found there?
alternate route would be to get a plant in europe (thru a friend), go to pick it up or let a friend bring it in: make cuttings from the plant. as far as i know you can bring cuttings thru customs/agro inspections (smth like limit of 6) for personal use.
ok, i got carried away there... nodding
the good news, it's not extinct, definitely not!
