Whee!
I just chopped some frozen Orange Spice jalapenos, that are now looking quite yellow Confused Confused Confused did the color fade in freezer? anyhoo, they can add spots of bright color, and little heat if you skip the seeds as I do.

I could consider starting peppers mid Feb - they seem so slowwwwww..
Plant it and they will come.

They are definitely slower than tomatoes... I start mine around March 15th, for planting out in early June. (That's just about a month earlier than the tomatoes I start to plant outside - as opposed to the ones that will be planted in my greenhouse; those also get started in mid March.)

Got seeds today - included my trial packets of peppers from TTomatoes. Cowhorn to try. My pepper colors are prone to fade, even when I dry them in the oven unless they are caught at just the right time. Flavor unaffected. I must have cajun squirrels as well. It takes enough cayenne and red tabasco to turn everything solid red.
So many roads to take, choices to make, and laughs to share!

I got some of the Cowhorn peppers from TT this year too; and I've also noticed that very few seed companies seem to be giving out the trial packets with an order, at least the ones I ordered from... Sad

I start my peppers AND my tomatoes mid Feb for Plant-Out Day a day or so after Mother's Day.

Seems to work for me.

For someone who won't eat peppers (sweet OR hot) I sure am growing alot this year: chile de Arbol (one from Baja CA and t'other from Oaxaca Mexico) . Crzig's Grande Jalapeno and Jalapeno M, Mexican Sunset, and two varieties of Hot Hungarian Wax yellow banana peppers/

Thanks for the new thread, Sandy. I can hardly wait for late February, when I will be able to start all of my pepper seeds (indoors, of course)!

At Walmart I saw a one gallon sweet pepper. I resisted buying it because I know I'd have to pamper it until warm weather. For us that could be July.
It's still cold, very dark and raining. I'm absolutely hating it.

yep, big box stores here always put transplants out for the "Indian summer" and I'm AMAZED at the crowds with scads of (mostly the younger adults) who rush to buy them. . and all the other growing stuff (soil, fertilizer erc)

I just smile at them and think. . . . well, at least they'll know how to transplant into their already-prepared garden area when they come in to buy replacement transplants!! Angel

Here peppers get started about a month before tomatoes; February 1, and March 1, for planting May 10-15. All peppers must be short season (50-65 days) or they will never ripen.

I don't blame you one bit. I started my pepper seeds indoors then moved them out to the greenhouse once they germinated. Even inside the greenhouse with the heater running the seeds and seedlings are still feeling the outside cold and they're growing so slowly. A lot of my vinca seeds rotted because they took too long to germinate due to the cold snap. That was very disappointing as those seed weren't cheap.

70* today, south wind blowing. Too too early for pepper seeds. I wait until our daylight length turns to 11 hours or a bit more. Too many chances of Fool You Feb taking them out, and way too long to deal with them indoors.

Between storms I ran to the store for Cokes and cat food.
Today is hibernating and laundry.

Group hug Hang in there! Yucky weather going on here to. It's horribly windy which sets me on edge. At least it's warm but I'm staying inside anyway.

High winds set my nerves on edge too. Strangely, I like thunder, it's fun. Just something exciting about it. We rarely have thunder.

I like thunder as well! Not loud booms but low rumbles. Btw, your soap is ready! Smiling I DMed you.

Pepper question: has anybody ever grown a white or black bell pepper? I've been wanting seeds for either of those for years but are they sweeter in taste than red ones? I mean I always eat mine green but still? Thinking

Whites are sort of bland compared to green peppers. The blacks that I have grown are similar in flavor to a green pepper.

White peppers do not appeal to me. It seems like pigments add nutrients like antioxidants so I wouldn't skip them
Plant it and they will come.

I wonder if white eggplant has less nutrients? And those almost white tomatoes?
