Somebody else besides me has found a use for my cotton balls: a finches nest the grand kids and Grandma removed from under the porch eves. These finches weren't the cleanest and Grandma said they 'had to go'! Thumbs down

The amount of water the atmosphere can hold is almost unimaginable. Here's a chart that, at least, will put it a little bit in perspective. The seedling garden I'm working in this Fall is about 20 feet by about 50 feet or 1000 square feet. Using 43,560 sq. ft. per acre, I calculated nearly 1200 gallons fell in there during Monday and Tuesday's rainfall of 1.90 inches. Unreal!

Surprising how that adds up, isn't it?! A couple weeks ago we had storm sit on us for 20 hours, dumping 7" on our .58 acre yarden, so by those calculations we had nearly 10,000 gallons of water. It's no wonder there were many flooded basements around. Not ours though, because it ran down our drive carrying lots of gravel and freshly sown grass seed out to the street. Ugg...

Better to shovel gravel than pump 300 gallons out of the basement like our neighbors! Thumbs up

Interesting late nite reading material about Leo Sharp, a once prominent Daylily hybridizer and grower/source here in the Midwest. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/06...

Yesterday Sunday, Nov. 2nd, marked the end of the growing season at my place when the temperature dropped to 30.4'F and was below 32'F for several hours. Dalias, Zinnias, all cooked! Pansies survived.

Photo taken Saturday, Nov. 1st. after Friday 40 to 60 mph windstorm

It took the wind and blowing mist from the waves on Lake Michigan, but it couldn't handle the calm and cold. These photos taken yesterday, Sunday AM, Nov. 2nd. How many of you knew that Nasturtiums will climb rocky ledges if they can find a place to wedge a leaf?

Gee, at just 30°F I still had three different species impatiens (Asian, not the regualar African types) blooming. But they didn't take the 24°F of a couple nights ago.

A technicality (and I think everyone here already knows I'm a stickler with botanical terms), but some species actually do wedge or curl leaves to gain support. I think nasturtiums attempt to use their stems.

Didn't know that, but an interesting factoid. Have to think if I have any application. Mine just drape down the rock into the pond, but then they are starting at the top not the bottom.

Rick, It's a funny thing, but both my neighbor's and my impatiens shed their leaves around late September and all that remained were the stems. They just turned yellow and dropped. Impatiens are usually some of the prettiest and best performers around the area here in the Fall. We're puzzled! Any Ideas?

Ultmately, yes! But the first leaf at the tip of the runner plays a leading role. I'll send you some pics. by Tree Mail tonight, Rick.

Thanks for reading and I'm glad you enjoyed the article. I have a room full stories like that. Maybe I will share some during the off season.

Hey Joe--think I should tell the story of 'Two Men and A Lily'?

OH, I would love that. I am somewhat house bound and now can't even walk a little in the garden. Like, what garden?? lol.

Only a temporary condition, BTW. Nothing serious.

I hope they illustrate how a leaf can unwedge itself, too. Quite a conundrum, I would think....
