That was my first thought, but I think Brook moved it closer to the window about the time we started the thread.

Dog Lover
Brook,
It looks like you are doing a good job with your plants. Looking back at previous pictures of the spider plant, I am able to count more leaves on the earlier pictures. The first picture of the spider plant looks like it has better color, maybe it is just the lighting. I am wondering if you gave it just a bit more water and took a picture one or two days after watering, would there be a slight color change?

The pothos looks wonderful!

As for feeding, I am going to let some more knowledgable people answer that one. I just made a mess of my violets on feeding. I bet the others will come by during the weekend to help.

Good job,
Leda

Pothos is a really fascinating plant. In the tropics, it grows by attaching small sucker roots along the stem to a wall or tree trunk. Once it gets as high as it can go, the leaves start to grow really large. I would love to figure out how to fool one into thinking it had climbed far enough to make the large leaves but so far the plant has been smarter than I am. I cut off long pieces with large leaves and put them in the filter for my fish pond. The roots clean the water and the leaves clean the air. They live years in the gravel of the fish filter but they stop growing the large leaves, they know that they are no longer high enough I guess. Here's a picture of them in my fish filter, hard to believe but it is the same plant you have Brook.

Hey Brook, wow, I was hoping you would be as interested in plants as we are. You have some nice starts for your home garden! Have you researched them yet to check to identify them and what they may need for lighting, soil, and water?

(Please, my fellow gardeners, do not be afraid to correct me. I love learning new things. That said...)

It looks like you have a succulent or cactus, perhaps Jade, but the leaf is not shaped quite the same? Some put out roots to feel around for a new home. When rooting cactus, it is best to let them "cure" in the air for a day or two before putting them in soil. That may be why some have roots and others don't.

The other new plant is commonly called "Lucky Bamboo" but it is really part of the Dracaena (my Latin spelling is awful.) Mine is starting new sprouts so I will be watching some youtube on how to cut it soon. I know one end needs to be covered in wax to seal it from watching youtube before.

The third one looks like a Chinese Evergreen to me. I don't know the Latin name for it. I know it can be grown in less light and is considered easy to grow, if I am correct on the identification. We are all on this learning path together, aren't we?

Jonna, @extranjera just taught me something new about pothos. I may have some growing out of my aquarium soon.

Brook, where did you get your cuttings? Did they tell you what they were when they gave them to you?

Happy growing... ttys

I'm wondering if your water has flouride in it? The spider plants are kind of sensitive to water with any chemicals. Most city water has chlorine too.
If there is any way to catch rain or snow and water the plants with that water, I would try that.
If you have to use the tap water, try putting it in a pitcher for a few days and letting it sit before you use it.
My spider plants grow like gangbusters in the summer when I put them outside! I hang some under trees, and put some in the ground. I found out that if I take them out of the pot, they don't get as big, but their roots get enormous! If I plant the pot in the ground, the tops get big and eventually the roots grow through the bottom of the pot. The baskets I hang under trees sometimes end up as bird nests. Rolling my eyes.
Spider plants are so much fun. I had a huge curly one in my college dorm room that we named Medusa. My roommate gave it a sip of cold coffee every morning and I thought that was terrible, but for some reason the plant thrived!
I had a hoya plant that we pinned to the top of our window. That's another plant you should look into--there's lots of different kinds of them and they are fairly easy to keep indoors.

Hi Brook,
Sounds like you are really making progress! Congratulations! I would not put it into a bigger pot until I looked at the roots to see how crowded they are. They will be wrapped around and around and very crowded. It may take awhile before it needs repotting.

Brooke, You will know when it is time because the spiders are known for their roots coming out the bottom of the pot and you wonder how they are surviving that way,but they love being pot bound and if it is growing now, just keep up the good work and wait until you see those little white roots coming out the bottom pot hole. When you do, then wait another week or so and re pot it...
Good job.
