Hi everyone!!! Another Jersey girl here...
Moved to our house almost 7 years ago and it was pretty much a blank slate, almost an acre, so slowly but surely filling it with flowers, shrubs and trees. I really wish I had more shade in our backyard. I like all kinds of style gardens but am a HUGE planner when planning the individual gardens...needs a theme and if it's close to the house colors have to match the house. Currently planning on finishing my "berm" and then next years BIG project is my veggie garden

Here is my berm in progress(purple and charteuse theme and going to throw some hot pinks in there)

We moved onto property which had been conservation land for 30 yrs. That was 40 years ago. Trees & shrubs had colonized it & we had a builder who said that he could 'sneak' the house onto it. So we live among trees (we only planted a tulip popular) & viburnums & things like Japanese barberry which we don't want.

The irises were planted in beds near the house & were shaded out as the trees grew. We now have them in beds in our old pony pasture & they get more sun. We are trying to cut back as we are getting on, but it is difficult to do as we hybridize the small irises. An old pink peony from my childhood home in WI is in front of the house & we have added a couple others, but mainly the sun is for the irises. We also have some daylilies but are going to have to move some of them because of creeping shade. We are 5 miles from the ocean NE of Boston.

Hello Allison, et al

I am JB aka Jacquie from Roblyn Christmas Tree Farm just outside Wrightstown, NJ on the corner of Rt. 537 and Sykesville Rd.

We have a few NJ friendly flowers around the farm but I have an entire field of Daffodils that I cut and sell wholesale in the Spring. I have a small greenhouse that I use to propagate tropical and tender perennials and sell them online.

I live here with my JR Terrier Barney, six parrots of all sizes, three barn cats, lots of barn swallows that I would love to scare off because the poop on everything, a family of groundhogs I just found under the feed barn and NO HUMMINGBIRDS, which I love and try to attract with pink, yellow and purple lilacs and red mandevilla. None this year and that upsets me. They should be here by now I would think. Sad

You can visit my blog and my website if you have time. I do not want to take up a lot of your space talking about me. I am shy, ask anyone. Rolling on the floor laughing

Nice to see you all, Especially like that mural, wow, I could learn to live like that, no sand to wash off your feet and the water never has seaweed or dead fish no green head flies. Love that. Hope to check in and keep up with the news here. This new site is very interesting and there is so much information. Hopefully we can all share and learn together. Have a wonderful weekend friends and neighbors. JB

Hello old friends & new ones.... oh thank God for this site... I could not manage cubits... too complicated for me... but Allison just send me here...

So for you old friends my garden is a jungle this year... everything is overgrown... some roses are Monster plants... even loosing so many this year to the voles (the count is 18! including all the beautiful climbers... oh that was hard!)

Right now I am downsizing ~~~~ yeah, can't keep up and the family wants the back of the house for a barbecue area... so I cave in... anyway my interests still pretty much the same.... roses, hostas, day lilies, irises, reliable perennials... succulents...

This is the jungle today... ha.! can you see any roses???

Well, I did not have the heart to pull all of them out... They are everywhere ... not only in the beds... even in the grass! so I figure that if they are that strong they deserve to bloom

Allison,
If you want I will give you an update in the Spring when the daffodil field begins to come alive and you can stop anytime, just give me a yell before you do so I am here and not in town on errands. Thanks for the warm welcome. I too love that jungle. Beautiful plants.

I noticed my black eyed susans are coming now. They get a nasty black fungus on them when it rains too much as they are growing. Anyone else have that problem? If so, what do you do about it?

JB, do you sell the daffodil bulbs, or just flower bouquets?

Hello Polly, Not bulbs, I purchase all my bulbs from Holland. I cut those little darlings each and every one and bunch them and sell them wholesale by the bunch to Farmers Market down the street. I used to put them out for sale here at my farm, but since the people are so nice at the market and they needed something early , we made a deal they pay me what I was asking here at the farm and just double the price to sell. They do very well and the flowers are fresh daily. Thank you for asking. Brecks have fresh and healthy bulbs if you are looking for good bulbs. People buy the cheap ones and many of them are old and seldom sprout nice blooms. Brecks also guarantee the bulbs.

JB, Nice to know another daffynut. At least you make some money on the madness. My list keeps growing and I am not done yet for the fall haul. We must have close to 400 named cultivars and species Narcissus now planted on the property.

Nice to see Kassia here too.

About me, I retired from owning bookstores in Nantucket and Vt a few years back. I then was able to work in our garden in a more serious way since my DH and I began planting it in 1983. We have two helpers, female 8 year old sister border collies, Nell and Winnie. We have a son who no longer lives on Nantucket, so he is of little help and groans at the size of what he assumes he will inherit some day. We do pay someone to mow the lawn, which is just really a yard as it is not nice enough to call it a lawn.

Aside from my main garden passion of planting too many bulbs of all kinds, we grow about anything that will tolerate our acidic and sandy soil as well as survive the hordes of deer and rabbits. And to win the battle over those 4 legged pests, we have erected a deer and rabbit fence around about a half acre of part of our garden which is spread over our 2 and half acres in total. The plants outside the fenced part are all ones that mostly get ignored or are lightly browsed by the pests. The plants include viburnums which I totally love too and all kinds of other native (indigenous) shrubs and trees as well as a healthy number of Iris, Paeony, Ferns, Hellebore, and a whole bunch of Japanese Maples. We maintain a veggie bed and put up a good deal of food for the winter. We also have a passive solar greenhouse that houses a sizable number of house plants during the winter, but it's primary function is to heat the house in the winter. My best garden project was the building of an endless stream that I began to execute alone, but then part way through the project I finally got some reluctant help from DH. I began it after seeing water features on DG that were done by women gardeners. Now my DH is the endless streams biggest fan and he joyously does all the work on it as it is his baby now.

I keep an extensive garden journal and a photo log of the garden being that I am a compulsive list maker. I also write regular garden articles for the local Nantucket paper from which the payments I receive justifies the purchase of more plants that I then write about. I do some pottery, lots of reading, enjoy traveling and am a foodie, I follow the Red Sox and lots of other sports, and am a news junkie and religiously follow the adventures and advice of other northeastern gardeners on the internet.

Here is a link to a big album for the first 6 months of our garden in 2011. Not all labelled yet. Sorry. Patti
