JB, thanks. It sounds like a fun way to pay for your passion. How many varieties of daffs do you grow?

I buy mine wholesale also through my nursery. Usually buying from Ednie or lately, ADR. Netherland Bulbs has also been a good source for me, although they don't have the varieties as Ednie does.

bbrookrd said:JB, Nice to know another daffynut. At least you make some money on the madness. My list keeps growing and I am not done yet for the fall haul. We must have close to 400 named cultivars and species Narcissus now planted on the property.

Nice to see Kassia here too.

About me, I retired from owning bookstores in Nantucket and Vt a few years back. I then was able to work in our garden in a more serious way since my DH and I began planting it in 1983. We have two helpers, female 8 year old sister border collies, Nell and Winnie. We have a son who no longer lives on Nantucket, so he is of little help and groans at the size of what he assumes he will inherit some day. We do pay someone to mow the lawn, which is just really a yard as it is not nice enough to call it a lawn.

Aside from my main garden passion of planting too many bulbs of all kinds, we grow about anything that will tolerate our acidic and sandy soil as well as survive the hordes of deer and rabbits. And to win the battle over those 4 legged pests, we have erected a deer and rabbit fence around about a half acre of part of our garden which is spread over our 2 and half acres in total. The plants outside the fenced part are all ones that mostly get ignored or are lightly browsed by the pests. The plants include viburnums which I totally love too and all kinds of other native (indigenous) shrubs and trees as well as a healthy number of Iris, Paeony, Ferns, Hellebore, and a whole bunch of Japanese Maples. We maintain a veggie bed and put up a good deal of food for the winter. We also have a passive solar greenhouse that houses a sizable number of house plants during the winter, but it's primary function is to heat the house in the winter. My best garden project was the building of an endless stream that I began to execute alone, but then part way through the project I finally got some reluctant help from DH. I began it after seeing water features on DG that were done by women gardeners. Now my DH is the endless streams biggest fan and he joyously does all the work on it as it is his baby now.

I keep an extensive garden journal and a photo log of the garden being that I am a compulsive list maker. I also write regular garden articles for the local Nantucket paper from which the payments I receive justifies the purchase of more plants that I then write about. I do some pottery, lots of reading, enjoy traveling and am a foodie, I follow the Red Sox and lots of other sports, and am a news junkie and religiously follow the adventures and advice of other northeastern gardeners on the internet.

Here is a link to a big album for the first 6 months of our garden in 2011. Not all labelled yet. Sorry. Patti

Hi everyone! I'm Celeste, I live in Maine on 18 acres and I garden on approx. 5 but that will change. :)
I have a small collection of lilies and dayliles and a few of everything else. I'm a Mother to 5 children, Grandmother to 6 @ the moment. That could change too. Rolling my eyes.

Can someone explain to me how the post Patti sent was put under my signature and looks as if I sent it? It looks like I copied something when in fact I did not. This is not a good thing to have access to other peoples names and signatures. In this case no harm was done, but I do not want it to happen again. I am not that active on these lists and if I am doing something to cause this to happen I need to know it. Maybe OneWish can explain it to me. Thank you.

JB it looks like you might have accidently hit the 'Quote' clicky when reading Patti's post so it duplicated it. Just guessing.

Aha!!!!!! Could be what happened because I have only one eye and if it gets tired I just may have done that. I thought maybe it was a glitch somewhere because for a few days my "font" has been changing and I do not know how to change that. Maybe I am doing that also without knowing it. Getting old is a problem, but I swear, so far the dementia has not taken hold that I know of. Maybe I had better go get checked? I take full responsibility and apologize for thinking we had a glitch. You people are so kind. I remember looking at her pictures and loving them all and when I left I am not sure how I backed up but I must have hit quote. Grumbling

Been there, done that JB Big Grin Also dave has been playing around with the font on this site so that's why it's been changing. I think he's finished now.
