Whoa! OK, I'll keep them and keep them damp. No rot or mold so far.

Wonderful picture! We are reading the poems of Federico García Lorca in my class now and this picture reminds me of a line in one of his poems.
Cantarán los techos de palmera.
Iré a Santiago.

It means 'the roofs of palm will sing, I will go to Santiago' and refers to the sounds of palms in the tropical breezes of Santiago,Cuba and that they often form an almost solid roof.

I can hear the sound they make in my mind, thank you for a great picture.

My sad looking baby cycad has finally recovered well!! So after neglecting it for over 2 years, have decided to repot it early this spring 2013, realizing I made a mistake in planting it too deep and using wrong container being a self-watering container, leaves turning yellow and dying. Now in a better draining container, caudex at its proper depth, then gave it consistent watering and it came back Hurray! Hurray! Am glad it is a slow grower, I thought I have killed it!

Way to go, Tarev! It looks great now.

I've used the self-watering containers for things that love lots of water, and they work great. Cannas, gingers and EE's love them. People who travel also make good use of them, and they are great for dry climates for plants that need to not dry out.

Again, the right application makes all the difference.

Thanks Elaine Smiling I do use the self-watering containers for my indoor tropical plants as well and they work great. I guess my main mistake too was planting the caudex too deep while in that self watering container. I find the cycad very thirsty in our very dry area, so I thought the self watering container will help it. Oh well..just glad it came back now, my little cycad has forgiven me. Hilarious!

One of the other seed bracts on the sand palm has thrown the seeds off. I think maybe the ones I planted earlier were not yet ripe, they were much smaller and browner than these. I've collected 15 of them and put them pointy side up in a pot. I've got some cinnamon on the surface and I'm only watering them with a spray so as not to get the bottom of the soil wet and rotten. It was the only pot I had large enough for all the seeds but I think it is a bit deep.

I've got the pot in a sheltered terrace with only overhead light that is covered by mosquito screen. It gets an hour or two of direct sun a day at this time of the year.

My other cycad is relishing this ongoing heat wave..first time to see it send out its new leaves in summer. Usually it does that in mid Spring or in early Fall. Am adjusting now my watering style..have to consider that since this one is in a container it has more watering needs. Smiling
