WOW Lin that is a nice one. I wonder why the plant trade do not sell the different plants. It is like they want to sell the same thing and do not go with a variety of plants.

Lin, I love the tidy full look of that plant. I wish I could find that. I think my Mom had it in the past. I didn't get any pieces of hers. I need to check with some of her friends to see if anyone still has it or a similar one.

I had never seen that one before I purchased it @ 2008 and have not seen it anywhere since. I don't have a clue where I bought it but would love to find it again!

I went back through my notes on trades sent these pics to the person who sent me these to confirm, it's Callisia congesta. To say that these cuttings have grown fast in the ground is an understatement!

Lin, I think your pic is/was the same thing?

Almost forgot this update, a cutting off of the plant I showed sharing a pot with birdnest fern upthread. PIG about a month ago, just the center piece. The 2 side pieces have grown since then.

Tiffany, It sure looks like an exact match!! Thank You! I'll upload a couple of pic's to the database.

I see Glasshouseworks has a C. congesta Variegata: http://www.glasshouseworks.com... but I think I like the green better.

The one I received has made two new babies. It looks different than the one you are growing Tiffany. It looks more like a stripe variegation version.

I noticed that there is a faint hint of pink since I put it in a little more sun. The picture does not show it because I am using a crappy camera because a Hawk took off with my good camera a couple weeks ago. I am still crying about that. It was the replacement camera I purchased when I was robbed.

Cinta, are you sure that's Callisia? It looks more like a Dracaena to me but don't go by that because I'm really bad at comparing photos. Here's what it reminded me of:

Corn Plant (Dracaena fragrans 'Lemon Lime')
Song of India (Dracaena reflexa 'Variegata')

I am talking about the plant that is under the Dracaena. It is a pot that was sent to me when my mom passed and I am trying to put some other plants in the pot because the Dracaena was the only plant in the pot that survived. I discovered later that it was the only live plant in the pot the rest were cuttings that the florist placed around the one surviving plant.

Rolling on the floor laughing Cinta, don't mind me ... my brain is really off today. *Blush* I have no clue how I missed the Callisia fragrans right below the Dracaena. Confused Blinking I really am getting old.

Okay raising this from the dead.

@purpleinopp did we ever decide that the variegated Calissia form is bigger than the non? The variegated one I received from Lin is still much bigger than my non variegated one.

The variegated purple heart I am having trouble keeping it from reverting to just purple. I discovered this summer that I have to grow it in total shade to keep it from reverting to plain purple.

Found this at Plant Delight.

Description

This cultivar has been around for years, but our most vigorous form came from Yucca Do Nursery. The unstable variegation pattern (comes and goes on a whim) results in leaves that range from solid purple (typical) to all variations of pink striping. Each 2' wide x 10" tall clump is topped in late summer with small lavender flowers, but the foliage is the reason to grow this cutie.

I don't think I have any of the regular C. fragrans anymore but I do still have 'Melnikoff' and it's always been larger in size than the regular one. I'll have to go out and do a walk around and take some pictures.

Well, I found that I do indeed still have the green variety as well as the 'Melnikoff' and some appear to be about the same size but some of the green ones seem to not have as many leaves as the variegated.

C. fragrans ......................................... C. fragrans 'Melnikoff' ....................... both together:

I wonder if I am getting a different growth rate because I only have mine in pots . The one you sent me the leave are almost double the size. Length seems to be about the same but the variegated the leaves are much, much wider.

Cinta, mine are all in pots too but there's a definite difference in growth habit between the green and the variegated one.

I'm not sure I've had the variegated one long enough to totally see what it can do yet since this summer was SOOO dry here and they weren't in the same conditions. I'd put the variegated ones in more-sun spots. From the material I came out of winter with (one pot of plain plants I've had for about 4-5 yrs & a few stems of variegated, new to me from summer '14.) Here are some pics I took just now, and a pic I'd already taken of under my workbench this past weekend. I did not plant the ones under bench, I laid them there last fall to send to people but didn't get as many takers as plants. They survived the unusually mild winter, took root & never stopped growing. The variegated is all out of the ground by now, from being grounded since March, because I wanted to make sure each piece of that was secure & needed them for 2 new hanging pots.

I didn't take pics of all of the plain ones at all, which all came from tossing pups from the 1 pot I'd kept inside all winter.

Very nice Tiffany!

The yard at our new house has so many trees and although my Callisia's don't get any direct sun, they are in very bright shade. I wish I had a spot where I could plant some of the variegated ones in the ground to see if their appearance and growth habit would be different than those in containers but we have a lot of Virginia Creeper vines as well as tons of invasive Arrowhead Vines that are taking over huge areas of the backyard! I'm sure the Callisia would be covered by all those weedy vines quickly if I planted them in the ground. Sad I would like to try to eradicate the non-native Arrowhead Vines and I yank a bit every time I'm outside. Some are easy to pull from sandy soil while others are a lot more difficult and the ones that have already grown up and over trees and shrubs have such thick stems that I'm not sure I'll ever be able to get rid of it all since they also grow epiphytically. Sighing!

Oh I love how you guys can stick these outside and let them go. All our zones have their perks, and I love growing things here too. I just killed one so fast years ago, and I hate killing plants.

@plantladylin I love your plant, Losing something you loved sucks.

Very nice plants girls. I don't even see these guys offered up here, except in two inch pots for pot fillers. Next spring I am grabbing some, and when I kill it, I just hope you three are happy with yourselves for making me want them again. Rolling on the floor laughing @purpleinopp @cinta @plantladylin

BTW Lin, I could not get the website to take your name with the @ to let you know you were mentioned for some reason. It took a bunch of tries. Just an fyi if anyone else is having that too.
