Wow, glad you brought that up, the moving of semps in late fall.
I had no idea. *Blush*

Not a good idea at all. They need time to settle in before winter weather hits.

See, it's these little pearls of wisdom and experience that makes this forum so very valuable. Lovey dubby

Newbies like me could end up loosing some semps by moving them at the wrong time.
I am seriously thankful that you brought that topic up. Thank You!

You can do the moving in late summer, or very early fall. That will give them enough time to re-establish before they go into their winter dormancy time.

I was wondering after someone commented on my photo in another post. Should I attempt to cut the top of of this semp (More Honey) and see what happens? They've only been planted for a few weeks and at first they looked like they were readjusting to being moved and replanted once I received them. After they started to look better and live, LOL, I didn't know what to think after they started to do this. I've never done it but I've seem where other people in the group have talked about it and gained offsets from doing it. If I need to cut the top part of, is there any particular way to do it?

Suggestions? Thumbs down Thumbs up

@springcolor, thanks for the feedback. I kind of figured someone would say that but I'm not exactly sure how or what to cut it with so I thought I would get some feedback from someone. Thank You!

Chad, here's two post where it was mentioned with pics.

I suggest feeling with your fingers just where the cone starts from and where the last set of non-bloom stem leaves are, at the center of rosette head. At the point where the coning starts is where I would lop off the cone leaving a few millimeters of stem left where the offsets will come in.

Here's a pic of one that Tim did recently. Note a wee bit of the stem is still visible.

Just to let you know I have done this lopping a few times and have gotten offsets but I have also once or twice gotten more bloom stalks on other semps that I tried this with.

Chad it is always hit or miss, but if you don't care about the blooms (I leave some since they add a brightness in the yard) and you aren't collecting seed (yet!) then lopping them off doesn't hurt, and hopefully helps - that's my theory! I use a sharp knife, but someone I know walks around her yard and just pinches them very quickly off snapping them like a snap pea Whistling Make sure to leave some of the bottom because that is where the offsets will come from. Once you have done it a couple times it'll be really easy! Thumbs up Keep us posted!

Does anyone have any idea when a blooming semp is too far along to snip? I have one that is elongating, but not actually flowering yet. I still am undecided on what to do at this point. Whistling

Hey JC - I have tried it on ones that were far along - it really is a chance thing = one thing that I have found helps is to baby the plant a little bit, like you would for a new transplant - shading from sun a bit and making sure there is regular water. I tip my hat to you.
