Lynn, I wasn't 100% sure so I thought I better ask now, lol. I'm already planning ahead since I think the operation was a success. Hurray! I just try to keep an eye on them every day and I swear they're making progress. More Honey has a look that I think is unique when compared to all my other ones and I really hope it can live and thrive in these brutal Oklahoma temperatures as well as the top lopping, lol.... No one ever talks about this, but you can start semps from a leaf. It doesn't always work, but I have done it. I have been fascinated with propagating plants since I was a very little kid. Almost any succulent will start from a leaf, so when I started growing semps, I tried them too.

It's a little tricky with semps, because you have to get the ENTIRE leaf at the base. You need every speck of the leaf tissue that wraps around the stem intact. Depending on the variety, some are easier to take a leaf than others. If any part of the leaf tears and "bleeds green" it won't take, so you might as well toss it. Now, lay leaf on dirt or cactus mix that is BARELY damp. It is best to use a small terrarium or glass bowl, with only an inch or so of soil in the bottom. You have to put the same side up that was up, when the leaf was growing on the plant. This sounds like common sense, but sometimes after you take a leaf it's hard to tell, so lay them out, when you take them. Now, prop the leaf up with a small stone or something, so that the edge of the leaf that was on the stem touches the dirt. Don't cover it up. Now, cover the bowl with plastic wrap and put in a sunny window. It's hard to do outside, because wind blows them, rain washes them away, and they dry out too quickly.

Now, just wait. If it took, you will see small roots come out of the end of the leaf. Then you know you're good. Soon, the teeniest semp you ever saw in your life will form at the base of the leaf. Like I said, it doesn't always work. Some rot almost right away. Some dry up, but some DO TAKE! Lovey dubby And, you really have nothing to lose but a few leaves on a plant that's going to die anyway. Smiling

Good luck!

valleylynn said:Tim it couldn't be MCG. They don't sell single offsets. They send orders like SMG does, with multiple offsets per order.

I think they used to send two individual plants, but not anymore. I actually remember receiving two individually potted plants last year, and that was stated clearly on their web site. They now advertise a single plant. Whether or not it has offsets is not guraranteed.
Here is my order from MCG that includes the 'Jewel Case' that is now flowering.

'Jewel Case', 'Sundancer' and 'Lemon Sky'

One is offsetting/dividing, the other two are not.

Margo how very interesting. Have you taken photos of the process?
What a great article that would make. And you give great detailed instructions.
How do you remove the leaf from the rosette? With a knife?

Tim we cross posted.
Yes I just had a conversation with Greg.
When did you get that order? Have you contacted them about it blooming? I would. Send them a photo of it.

I received that order on April 21st. One of the MCG folks told me they were selling out their stock, so I can well understand they would not want to send out multiple plants.
I don't really feel that strongly about it. They sent me a very nice plant and I was happy to get it. If it blooms... that's just how it goes sometimes.

Propagating from leaves is a very interesting idea. I had thought it was possible with Sempervivums. I asked the MCG folks if they did this and they said they did not, it was all offset propagation. It seems to me you could get a heck of alot of plants with leaf propagation. Even a blooming rosette could be turned into a buttload of new plants. I'll bet somebody's out there doing it.

They do tissue culture all the time with semps. Not sure what the process is.

No, Lynn, I never took pictures. I'm just a doer...not a documentor. (Is that a real word?) If I documented, I could have written a book years ago. Smiling I'm always doing unconventional things, just for funsies.

Margo I too have used that amazing tool - well not the one you used but one similar Rolling on the floor laughing I've had semps grow from leaves on 2 occasions, just on their own, the leaf fell off and I left it. It is partly why I like growing using chicken grit for the top dressing - the leaves and small offsets have an easier chance to root. Packardian is the one I had grow from a leaf. I'm going to try several this year I think, propagating is much more my speed than seeds! I tip my hat to you.

OMG, I'm glad someone brought the topic of buying bloom outs. I've had heuff. 'Nanette' since April and every rosette is sending up flower stalks! Sheesh, I feel like I rented the plant! Sad
I'll be performing surgery on at least one of them tomorrow. Crossing Fingers!

It's already finished, sorry. Do you think I have a chance of forcing a rosette?
