I think we got up around 90° today. This morning I was out starting work on a lasagna bed. Autumn is definitely in the air. There was a gentle breeze and it was almost crisp out. The air had a different texture. It was wonderful!

Autumn starts at 4:21 am Wed.! Hurray! (that's what I heard on our local news). I don't want any more 80's, but that's what were getting today and a few more days this week.

Crumbs! I just had to check the extended Accuweather forecast - 39 on 10/3! Sad And according to them, first freeze will be the week of Halloween.

Well... the end of October isn't too bad if we're talking about the first freeze here in the UP ! (keeping my fingers crossed that we'll make it that far!)

That would be great for the UP! Does the lake offer any temperature moderation come winter? DD lives in Holland and is supposed to be a zone warmer than me.

We're very near (but not actually "on") Lake Michigan, and yes, it does help moderate things; we often avoid frost when people not that far away get hit hard. Once the lake freezes over, though, seems like things are colder here than in the interior... but I'm not going to think about that right now! (at least I don't live by Lake Superior Big Grin )

Gosh - it was chilly up at Marquette on Lake Superior when we visited a couple of years ago in August. Can't imagine it in January. No, let's not think about that north wind coming all the way down frozen Lake Michigan.
Is anyone growing corn salad in zone 5/6? My plants are very tiny and I was wondering how cold they can get.

Yep, when the wind comes off Superior it's pretty much always chilly; but when it goes the other way in the summer Marquette is warmer than we are!

Saw your question about the corn salad on the other thread -- I grew it in my unheated hoop house last fall and it lasted well into the freezing weather, then started growing again in the spring; if you leave a couple of plants to go to seed you'll never need to buy seed for it again, believe me.

Patti - farmerdill posted a pretty nice link over on the vegetable forum - check it out. You might want to grow some in your new lasagna bed. Smiling Well, maybe next year?

Patti, in case you don't make it over to the vegetable forum, corn salad (aka mache) is a salad "green" that grows in rosettes of leaves and is very cold hardy. An excellent thing for fall planting! It's very mild flavored and a nice addition to fresh salads during the colder weather when not much else is growing. Smiling
