Wow...

Dick, you need to go into the "spotty dotty" biz...you could undersell that listing and still make money.

Sure is a pretty plant, no doubt about it.

i now have a really large clump that could be divided, i think i bought it in 2005
BUT
it would take a cpl of years to get each one up to the size of the ebay one

Terra Nova introduced the plant in 2004 and i think they only sold it for 2 or 3 years
and they are not making it any longer
any plant you see for sale most likely is from their sales and should be nice size

i think my P.delavayi is going to be just as nice some day

the scientist/botanist haven't made up their mind on the name of the genus for the Chinese plants
some use Podophyllum others use Dysosma
the Chinese use Dysosma
and all of the nice ones are Chinese Smiling

We better prefer the Dysosma name, eh? *grin

Whatever it's called, you have a keeper there. I'll have to google for more info; just hoping it is hardy in your zone. Think it'll grow in zone 7 or 8...wouldn't Northern Calif be one of those?

I don't think anything brings me more smiles than my cane begonia/Angelwing Begnoia. These pictures are older and both plants have more than doubled in size and have brought wonderful color to my shady yard. It takes our hot, hot heat of the summer but comes indoors for the Texas winter. I have given away several cuttings. I love to share!

Hi, Thanks for the welcome. The first picture is not identified. But the second, spotted one is "Matchmaker". Canes are not as easily propagated as wax begnoia. You have to be patient. And pretend I am to get more of these lovelies!

Watch out for snow on the mountain. very invasive.

Of course lilies of the valley are invasive as well.

Tough to choose five! I have to go with the ones that are most successful in my garden with heavy neutral soil and fairly low rainfall, tolerant to frost. Also those with attractive foliage and that don't also grow in sun, that helps me to eliminate some favourites like Aquilegias, Violas and Astilbe.
Hellebores
Epimediums
Heucheras
Pulmonaria
Brunnera

Great picks Vanessa! Four of yours are among my favorites and I've been meaning to look into some of the stunning Brunnera I see posted here. Hellebores and especially Epimediums and Heucheras probably welcome much more sun here than in your climate though.

Hm, maybe they would here too, I don't know since I only planted mine under trees, mostly deciduous trees. My Heucheras seem to like it under Japanese Maples, and my Epimediums are doing very well under lilac and Viburnum Burkwoodii. The Heuchera under the Eucalypt is more stunted but that may be water issues. The Epimedium under the Arbutus unedo is not doing well at all though it's surviving, I may move it. I've just put more Epimediums under the apple tree, Japanese Maple and south side of the garage, see how they fare. I'm watching where they spread to, and if they spread out into the sun They will teach me what they can cope with here.

Ferns, Solomon's Seal, Jack in the Pulpit, Hostas, vinca minor...then large pots of Elephant Ears added in the summer.

Not a fan of periwinkle as it really takes over here and can be invasive in the bush. But I do love ferns, and I forgot that tree ferns are a favourite shade plant of mine here (Dicksonia antarctica).

When I lived in California one of my favorite places to visit at Golden Gate Park was a tree fern glad. Walking under and around them was a wonder for a New Englander.

yes, they don't grow here, but I saw them in England when we went to Cornwall.
