Maryott's plants often rebloom after I receive them in the summer or fall, which is one reason I love them. And my LEGACY OF LEGENDS that I got from Subhana Ansari a few weeks ago has already rebloomed for me too, and she's a friend of Bill Maryott.

Likely because he gets more cycles of bloom in his climate and the plants had already set scapes before they were shipped. With the scapes already set before shipping they would bloom after arrival unless something caused them to abort. It is several weeks between the time a scape is initiated and when it actually blooms.

The climate where he grows is also quite different than where many of these plants were bred and therefore his mid season is often later. May and June along the California coast tend to be quite cool and grey so the plants may be adjusted to when things warm up later in the year.

According to him, in his mild climate daylilies have pretty much continuous bloom all summer and implies that in that area bloom isn't really seasonal.

Edited to add this quote from his website http://daylilygarden.net
"The climate here in Corralitos is like no other we're aware of. We have mild temperatures, little precipitation, and lots of midday sun year around. We have fine sandy loam and unlimited water. Our daylilies bloom continuously from May until November."

Hmmmm .... well, I am in Florida, we've had a lot of rain this year, and I have not had continuous blooms. I haven't had cool temps, but it's not been that bad this year. I am wondering if they have their own fertilizer mix or something that initiates scape production.

Betty - Does Subhana Ansari live in the same general area as the Maryott's?

I remember Gerry was growing some of her newly acquired daylilies indoors in pots in Winter and was getting blooms, too. Which is why I am thinking some kind of fertilizer mix is involved. My blooms stopped in late July. Yet it is still nice and sunny and warm here.

Or you are saying that the California weather is basically a late Spring/Summer? So the plants are blooming later like October?

Yes, Subhana lives north of Bill Maryott right on the east side of the San Francisco Bay.

Bill told me once that by the time he starts shipping in June all the plants have finished their first cycle of bloom, and just about all of his are listed as rebloomers.

First cycle of blooms in June has been typical here in Florida, too. This year though we had Spring temps earlier and I had blooms earlier. My first cycle of blooms was May instead of June this year. So that is only 1 month off from normal. Bill's bloom cycle is similar to mine. But I've never had blooms this late in the season. This is Fall, not Spring or Summer. Zoe Allegra is listed as a mid-season bloomer, but not a re-bloomer. Mid-season meaning July or August? This is the middle of October! I received numerous daylilies this season and none bloomed or rebloomed this late. In fact, that plant will be the only one unless another daylily surprises me.

It is warm here and will be through December, I could absolutely have late or re-blooming daylily flowers. That is why I ask about the fertilizer or what Bill might be doing to prompt late blooms like this. I want to know his secret if there is one! My climate would be a good climate to have late or re-blooming daylilies, so how do I get my plants to cooperate?

When is midseason depends on your climate, so it is basically whenever your peak bloom starts. July or August sounds late for your peak to start.

You'd also have to compare the conditions when the scapes are initiated, which would be several weeks prior to when you can see the scape (or several months before you can see it where I am, because winter intervenes but scapes are starting in fall). As I think Maurice has mentioned, Arisumi's research found that daylilies forced at 85 degrees F didn't flower as well as those forced at 75 F and it doesn't get very hot in summer where Bill is. Do any others on ATP in Florida get continuous bloom all season and would they get as warm in summer as where you are?

In the quote I gave above from his website, he says they get plenty of water (which people often associate with rebloom), and elsewhere on his site he says daylilies are heavy feeders which would imply he also keeps them well fertilized. What fertilizer do you use, and how much?

...I'm so excited, I just saw a scape coming up on my Lakes Swan Dance daylily! It's very new, I just planted it a month ago, so I'm curious what it will look like in person. If all goes well, I will post a picture of it in a couple of weeks when it blooms. I certainly wasn't expecting a bloom out of it this year, so what a nice surprise!

Sue - Peak bloom season here for me was May this year. I had later blooms in June and a few to the middle of July (I believe that those were late bloomers or a few re-bloom). I can't remember if I had anything blooming in August or September. Sorry, but my life this year has been pretty stressful (work and my sister dealing with cancer just to name a few things) so I neglected to write blooming times down.

I alternate fertilizing with Miracle-Gro (liquid), time-released Osmocote, and milorganite. I also use pine fines and alfalfa spread around in the raised beds to attract earth worms. I water regularly several times a week.

Becky, I was just addressing your question of what midseason means, in your case it would appear to be May, not July-August as you were pondering.

As far as fertilizer is concerned, it's hard to compare with Bill's, which is what I understood you were trying to do. Different climate, different soil/media, and potentially a different amount of fertilizer, and without knowing the amount being applied by both of you, e.g. lbs per acre of N per year.

Sue - So does that mean it has to do with Bill's climate more than anything?

It's a possibility but its difficult to compare. If others in similar climates in Florida to yours get continuous bloom then it would point more to the other factors.

You're welcome, although too bad I couldn't have been more so. Here's a possibility for you, John in Florida mentioned 'Butterscotch Ruffles' in another thread (see below). Can't remember if you said you have this cultivar, think you might, but it might be worth testing under your conditions to try and answer your question.

The climate in some locations in California is conducive to rebloom.
Hybridizers in both California and Florida have indicated that nearly all daylilies rebloom in their growing conditions and locations (that includes cultivars that were not registered as being rebloomers and even daylily species).
Hybridizers may tend to grow their daylilies under optimum fertilizing and dividing conditions.

I have been test fertilizing some of my daylilies with high nitrogen. When I do so I get rebloom.
I grew 'Mosel' for many years under average conditions - it had never rebloomed. I then started giving it high nitrogen fertilizer several times a growing season. The first year it just grew bigger but did not rebloom. The next year it rebloomed. It then rebloomed each year I gave it fertilizer. After I stopped fertilizing it stopped reblooming.
I grew 'Ophir' for many years under worse than average conditions. It never rebloomed. I then gave it high nitrogen fertilizer and it showed the same behaviour as 'Mosel' - it is reblooming right now.

This is a list of daylilies that have bloomed this October here on rebloom scapes and that I had fertilized with high nitrogen:
American Freedom
Don't Mess with Me
Lemon Picasso
Wide Load
Bubbling Over
Cherry Valentine
Ophir

Sue - No I don't have 'Butterscotch Ruffles'.

Maurice - What you wrote is what I have been thinking all along. More fertilizer and water, more reblooms and late flowers. What fertilizer do you use?
