There were some discussions a year or two ago about alphabetization of plants.

They might BE alphabetical, just not based on the names you expected.

I would have guessed that they were alpha by Latin name, not common name ... but I see they aren't. Mine all look alpha by the common name they are listed by in that list:

T-for-Tomato, not S-for-Solanum or A-for-'Azoychka')
Bok Choy or Pak Choy,
Lettuce or Butterhead,

Alphabetizing plant names is like herding cats.

First, get everyone to agree on one, unique name for every cultivar.
But many people resist the mostly-Latin binomial names, and that's the only name even CLOSE to standardized. And even THEY keep changing!

I just noticed an instant motivation to add every last cultivar in my stash to the plant database.

Clever!

You know a system is well-designed when new features dovetail productively or synergistically with existing features.

I read the theory that it usually happens when the design has high "structural homology" with the real thing it represents. That just means that it is organized in software the same way "the real thing" is organized in the real world. But that ain't easy to make happen!

Right now they are listed alphabetical by common name, but they are grouped by how you have them listed. If you have some listed as available, others show but not available, and others private, then they will be listed alphabetically within each group.

I have some of my seeds listed with common names and some with botanical, all alphabetical but two.

I also pulled some from the data base that aren't clickable.

Well, that seems weird! I have quite a few that seemed to link to the DB, but are not clickable. Two are Red Spider Zinnia, and Costoluto Genovese tomato.

If you pull it from the database but then change the name, it will lose the link to the database.

This is a design feature. It lets you customize the name of the plant so you can do things like "Daylily Foo X Bar" and then of course that's now a different plant than what you originally selected.

If you want it to link to the database, choose the plant from the pulldown and then don't edit the name.

I'm still playing along with my virtual swap here.

My list would not be clickable but it's designed in a way that my can easily read. I selected the plant from the menu but rearranged so the (Botanical name) first then the common name that I use. Doing it this was created an alphabetical list that my eye and brain can comprehend. My eye/brain expects alphabetical to look a certain way so I have to work with what I have.

Even though my list is not clickable, all a person needs to do is copy/paste the (Latin name) into the upper left search box to find the plant in the database.

May I ask please how many have signed up and is there a list of name? Thank You!

Greene! You are a Genus, I mean genius. I hate to lose the clickability but your method comports much better with the way my mind and my existing spreadsheets work. I would be more comfortable. I think I will do likewise.

Edited to say: Well, never mind. I don't want to go in and delete all those entries I already have and start over, but going forward I will go with the "greene" method. If I have a photo I can add it in the provided space.

The problem for me is that there seem to be two three threads talking about the same thing. I just discovered that this morning when GardenQuilts/Andi asked to join the swap. Now that I know there are multiple threads I will remember to check all three.

Um, er...I just scrolled through this thread and no, there is not a list.

I'll go look on the other thread, the one that says "sign up"...http://garden.org/thread/view/42926/Signup-for-the-Dave-and-Trish-Beta-Seed-Swap/
I scrolled through and see that some people signed up and others asked if they could join. I still don't see a list of names.

I do see your post that says soon we will be able to see who is participating. http://garden.org/thread/view_...

Quite a few of the entries in my list are not clickable -- and I just tried re-doing one (morning glory "Split Second") and made sure I pulled it out of the pulldown from the database, and it still doesn't work. I don't consider this a major issue but am wondering if this is something I'm doing wrong or just a glitch ?

I'll be looking into the clickable issue.

I usually don't like to do it this way, but I may have to offer an option. You have to pick:

1) My plant is in the database (in which case you get the pulldown and can't edit the name)

or

2) My plant isn't in the database, or I want to just type the name (in which case you type what you want and no link is made.)

I'm wondering why some aren't getting a clickable link, once they chose their plant from the database. It has worked every time in my experience. It was only when I tried to change the name that it is not clickable.

Question, did I read that we will not be able to add any seeds once the swap starts? I was thinking that I might offer more seeds once I see what people are wanting. But maybe this can be an option, once you get passed the beta testing phase. Then, various hosts can change the details of the rules?

But not very many beans fit into 2x3" Ziplocs, and I have thousands of those to use up!

I bought 3x4 inch baggies yesterday. My husband thought it was overkill for the amount of seed I have, but I told him, the larger size would likely be easier to get seed into.

And I have those little measuring spoons! I will try my postal scale, but it only shows to the tenth of an ounce.

@Wildflowers / Christine -- could you try adding morning glory "split second" to your list and see if it ends up clickable for you? It seems strange that some of my entries ARE clickable and then others aren't, even when I've definitely chosen them from the pulldown.
