On The LA, use the drop down search box and select description, then type in bud builder. Currently there are a few.

Olallie's has these marked as bud builders:
VT Chris" Velvet Red
VT Christmas Red
VT Ripe Grapes
VT Gold Sights
VT Maroon Branch
Olallie All Summer
VT Bright Idea
VT Filaree Forever

These are called "Scape Builders": (Any idea what that means?)

What does VT stand for?? I have Chicago Apache and it is nothing, just a regular daylily, dormant. Mary Todd is in the data base but nothing special. I went to AHS and there is no such term related to daylilies. (scape builder) Blinking

The "VT" I believe stands for Vermont and is used to seperate the registered cultivars with the prefix "Ollalie" registered by George or Chris Darrow from their unregistered seedlings. The "Olallie" prefix being for registered plant names and the "VT" prefix for unregistered seedling names.

My guess would be "scape builder" is their way of saying rebloomer. Shrug!

Wondering if bud builders have this trait consistently or do they sporadically skip years?

It does not seem like any with VT in front are registered. The few that are registered are not listed as budbuilders except 'Olallie All Summer'.
But I think they are saying that they are budbuilders for them. From what I have seen it is not really a consistent trait. I have several that have not bud build-ed so far. I did see one in my picture files that looked like a classic spiral scape. (I will show you when I find it again)
I read before that a daylily can build buds in one yard but not the neighbors. Conditions have to be just right. Here is the links from previous post.

I am guessing scape builder would mean continuous rebloom; I can e-mail them and ask this question.

Well, ok. That might be a good idea. If bud builder is building buds then maybe scape builders build scapes. I found a new one on the LA it is called SEASON FINALE it is not even listed as a rebloomer, No extended bloom and no bud building, but the seller said it is a bud builder. Whistling

So a bud builder would have 7 or more buds per branch rather than an average of 3-5 for regular DLs? I get confused counting branches; if there is a Y or a W terminal at the end of the main branch, that is counted as one branch? Now is a good time to harvest old scapes and count buds. Count total per scape also. I really like the idea of continuous rebloomers, which I think is defined as 3 scapes coming up from the same fan? Is that right?

I think it means it blooms over and over on the same scape. Different people say stuff like 'this is a bud builder for ME', so I am assuming that bud builders don't bud build for every one. Conditions have to be right. However if you know it builds buds for someone with similar conditions to yours then you could hope it might do it for you. I purchased a few hoping I would get to see this event but it has not happened so far, but I can hope, right? And I can keep on trying.
On the LA I have seen '4-way branching (1 lateral + terminal “w”). So as you can see the 'w' is counted as three branches and the 1 lateral is one branch making a total of 4 branches. Here is another:
'6-way branching (4 laterals + terminal “Y”). So the 'Y' is counted as two. Check out this diagram from the AHS. This is way cool, I am going to print this out, here is the link.

Thanks, now everything is still clear as mud! haha - just dense, I guess! Well, I have a spent scape with (several) ? branches that has about 45 bud scars. I don't know what it is, I call it yellow many blooms.

The new page and definition in the AHS dictionary for branching is so much better than before, Thanks for the link Susan.

Yesterday I took a few images of Pee Wee's Big Adventure which is still blooming and is a budbuilder. Curt has it listed as one in his catalog and it definitely is here each year. On this scape so far there are 6 bud scars, one finished bloom and 3 buds growing on the left branch The right branch has 7 bud scars and 3 buds.Twenty buds just with the terminal "Y", I didn't count the scars on the laterals.

Thanks Char! Very good illustration, I almost bought that one last year but did not meat the minimum order at Browns. Who is Curt??

Yellow Many Blooms would be a good name for a bud builder!
