Sometimes I will be asking or answering a question but need to 'pause' for a minute to find a reference or link that needs to be included in my post. Is there a way to keep my unfinished typing while I hunt for the reference? (Does this make sense. Will reword if not.)

There have been times when I have been able to leave and come right back to continue my post. Other times, not. Is it a question of time away? Or perhaps the difference was whether I had been in preview mode.

Just now I'm glad I copied what I had been typing to my desktop just in case I'd have to start over. Because — yes, I did have to start over.

What am I doing wrong? (Y'all, please don't list everything in the world that I might be doing wrong. lol) Thanks.

What works for me if searching on the NGA site or another site, I just open up another window, and keep my answer in the original one, if that makes sense.

^^^That. Open another window find what you need, then go back to your NGA window. If you have Windows there is a plus sign on top next to the tab you are working on . Click on it and a brand new window opens for you. Sometimes I even open a second window of NGA to find something I want to refer to.

I agee, open another window or tab. Sometimes I open several tabs doing research needed for an answer.

Thanks, y'all. I have opened a new tab before. But I've only done that when looking for something outside of (external to) NGA. Didn't know I could have 2+ NGA tabs open at the same time.

You can also press and hold the ctrl key (bottom left on your keyboard) then the "T" (for Tab) key and get a new window.

And if you accidentally close a tab that you need to get back, hit Control-Shift-T and it will magically reappear.

I love magic!

FYI - Not sure that shortcut works on a iMac.

@tx_flower_child I'm not familiar with iMac but "Command" T opens a new tab on Macbook. In Safari, you can click "File" on the top bar and "New Tab" shows on the drop-down menu.

@McCannon — Yep. I generally do File —>New Tab. Laziness on my part b/c I don't like to memorize a lot of keyboard 'short cuts'. I know that I'm probably in the minority but I figure there's only so much RAM left in my brain.

But I did try "Command" T just now and bingo! It worked.

"Control" T did not work.

Mostly when people give out computer tips I always like to point out that some apply only to Macs and some apply only to PCs and some depend on which browser is being used. That's all. By now, I would hope a lot of the shortcuts would be the same across most systems. Years ago they weren't and that was just silly.

@tx_flower_child, I hope that makes it a little quicker/easier for you. I don't use many keyboard shortcuts.I have "Wiki" bookmarked and just open it in a new tab and go from there.

Yes, multiple tabs, or entire new windows. When I am at work, I always have one tab on calendar, one tab on email, various tabs for other work-related websites, and if I get a down-minute, other new tabs to look at plant-stuff. Oh, and certain times of day, I have a tab for a radio station.

Decades ago I was a mainframe systems programmer. My particular area was 'security'. But times have changed and I guess nothing is really 'private' or 'secure' anymore.

Other than banking online, I don't really have anything to hide. Just hate being tracked.

Just found this question. Never though about asking same question for my phone. Tabs. Browser. Etc. I don't understand. I've had same problem as tfc. Is there a simpleton way of me opening a second garden.org page on my phone ?

Private Windows only mean the browsing history isn't stored locally, unfortunately. You can use some addons to blocking the tracking aspect of ads, but beyond that, there is almost no way to control who logs your traffic upstream (i.e. your ISP, etc.). In Australia we now have metadata laws that mean a lot of this browsing history must be recorded by the ISPs! Not too happy about that, but not much you can do without subscribing to an overseas VPN (and I'm somewhat skeptical of those, too).

I have a friend that I used to kill time with work with a number of years ago. That gal is a true techie! She was being interviewed on NPR a week or so ago talking about security and VPNs. She said that in the end, VPNs aren't going to help all that much either. And for the every day user, VPNs can get a little confusing. I wish we still lived in the same town so she could come over and mess with my set up. Or my nephew in Boulder would come to visit and show me some stuff. He's very very techie. All I can say is that I used to be.

One time I was listening to an interview about kids who get degrees in Computer Science (or whatever they call it now). I was shocked to learn that universities only offer one 3 hour course in Computer Security. Don't remember now if it was even a required course.

Our laws in the U.S. of A. aren't all that friendly either. And when they are, there's always a promise that some day they won't be.

@tx_flower_child I, too, am disturbed by the lack of security-related material and general lack of awareness in this area the moment you step outside the IT field (I am an Electrical and Computer Systems Engineer and studied a lot of programming electives at university); even then it seems many who should know or build privacy and security into their designs don't, as we keep hearing of hacks and other security breaches in the news every few months over the past few years. There are some disturbing implications of the Internet of Things and our ever more connected world that I hope we don't regret in the coming years.
