It got MUCH more productive as the weeks turned to months. I'll try to get out and take more photos very soon. The herb spiral right now is pretty much loaded up with plants. Making this herb spiral is probably one of my biggest gardening triumphs.

Harvesting was as easy as walking up and snipping off what you want. Couldn't be simpler or easier. In fact, it's easier to harvest because you don't have to stoop all the way to the ground.

I wouldn't have done anything differently. I can't think of a way to improve on this.

What will you add to the top when the logs at the bottom rot enough to cause the surface to sink?

I will add that I did/will stand up on the first layer to reach the very top center for a "big" harvest. I'm 5'4, and can reach just fine to do little snips for dinner, but to do a full harvest of that oregano, I have to step up. Since that only happens at most twice per year, it isn't an issue.

Great that you have that first layer to act as a step up.

We vertically challenged individuals always have an issue with the reach taller folks think little about.

I just love the compact area this spiral provides for your herbs.

Since I grow only a small clump of about 6 each varieties of herbs,

I don't have much of an issue.

There has already been some settling. The soil has sunk about 1 inch since I filled it originally. I am expecting further sinkage for certain. My plan is to simply top up with more material - compost, dirt, mulch, and so forth. The plants may have to be lifted so they don't get buried. That's a bridge I'm contemplating as I get nearer to having to cross it!
