I'm not familiar with Spanish lavender, but it sure looked like rosemary.

Beautiful! Sort of makes me think of a castle turret long left vacant & nature has taken over.

The lavender is on the south facing side. To the right of the lavender is a (I think) Tarragon or Mexican Marigold. Trish would confirm for sure (these are all her plants!) Smiling

Okay, I had Trish help me out here.

This is the south view again, with numbers. The plants are:

Thumb of 2012-10-06/dave/8a1581

A: Spanish Lavender
B: Mexican Marigold (aka Mexican Mint)
C: Oregeno
D: Globe Basil (going to seed)
E: Stevia
F: Bay Leaf (you can see it's a single stem plant)
G: Marjoram

Hope that helps!

Spanish lavender is one of the fern leaf varieties. It is not listed as hardy for me (only for zone 9, but I'm testing out the microclimates that the spiral should produce for me this winter. I'd also love it if that stevia would winter over! We'll see!

Mexican Mint Marigold is a substitute for tarragon. Thumbs up

Just seeing it makes me want to run my hands through all of it and just stand back then and inhale.
For hours. It's beautiful.
And wouldn't it be something if it all did overwinter.

It did turn out wonderfully and well worth the effort. I would suspect the soil will help insulate the roots to keep them winter hardy unlike being in a container.

I am guessing that you will not leave the bay where it is as it grows larger? It can become a large tree unless yours is a type I am not familiar with... Kristi

Kristi,

You are right- I don't plan to leave the bay there. I've actually killed two bays already, so this poor plant is where it is to see if I can keep it alive *Blush* I plan to move it in the spring.

There's a hyssop in there that I will be moving out probably today as well. It was just a tiny sprig, so this gave it a good place to grow a bit. I'm also considering moving out the chickory, but haven't decided for sure yet.

You are all in good company: the spiral is a magnet. Walking around it, you can't help but touch and brush and sniff! It's a destination place in the gardens. I love it!!

What great follow-up pics!

It all look great to me, quite a variety of plants in there, all ones I like, too! And Trish, I've had Stevia over-winter in the ground here for 14 years now so I imagine it should do just fine for you, barring any soil freezing/heaving.

That spiral bed is impressive! Maybe that should be a theme for ya'lls farm. Dave can make 10 or 15 more of those brick ones here and there; you can have an in-ground spiral veggie bed somewhere, a spiral fenced cow pasture (true "rotational grazing", eh? Rolling on the floor laughing ), and of course a spiral fort/castle for the kids to play in and such.

Shoe (slinking away, ducking, cus of all the work just suggested)

You better duck, indeed!! Hilarious! That spiral took me two solid weeks of daily work and I can't see doing another one anytime soon. But they would be very good to use for other things, too.

I do think a "winter spiral" for growing winter herbs would be fantastic. Lettuce, spinach, carrots, brassicas and so forth, with maybe garlic and onions, would do very well. There would need to be something one could grow in the summertime on it, though. Maybe just a big old gourd plant growing all over it.

Well, I do have a lot of iron ore sandstones around here that would make an attractive spiral... Whistling
