Chris please help! After reading about Oddity, I went outside to see if mine was changing. When I got to the "Lynn Chick Pen" I stood there and cried. ALL of my Semps in that bed are totally brown. What happened? Did the Sun do it? They were beautiful last week. On Thursday of last week I took some of the off-spring of many of the Semps. and took them to a Round-Up in Fairy Stone Park, VA. and gave them to 4 different people. I'm crying here, All my babies that Lynn gave me last Summer are brown. Do I leave them and hope that some will survive or do I start over? My heart is hurting, I loved every one of them. I'll go out now and get a picture, it may even make you cry, they are so bad.

Oh no Faye, I feel your pain. Group hug If they're totally brown, they probably are gone. It could very well be that they got fried by the sun. If they feel crispy, that's probably what happened. If they're all mushy, they rotted. I think you're having the same heat wave we are and semps have to be watered very carefully in this weather to prevent rotting, especially if your soil doesn't drain quickly. I've been putting the hose on just a trickle of water and making sure only the ground gets wet - no water on the semps at all.

Crying , Crying For real, I am crying. I think I know what happened to my beautiful Lynn Garden. Last week Ray had to get a new water hose that would reach to the corner of the yard so I can water Angel Trumpets. He had told me that he watered my flowers while he had the hose stretched out. I never thought about my babies, but they are at the end of the bed he watered.
He saw me crying this morning but he will never know that trying to help me is killing my Semps. This is Commanrer Hay, one that I shared last Sat.

Anyone have Semps. for postage? I'm going to have to start over. I'm so glad that only the first box of Semps were planted here and not the Fall box.
After taking these pic. this morning I hit the panic button and checked out all my Semps. and thought it strange that the Sun wasn't hurting all of them. That's when I realized all of them hadn't had the thorough watering that my "Lynn Garden" had. Sad

Faye, I am so sorry to see that.

I have had many losses of semps when I planted them in the garden partially due to the weather here in NC.

So I went to pots and no longer lose any.

We also have those nasty pine voles that come under the semps, beneath the ground and eat the roots!

I can share some semps with you, just shoot me a treemail. Smiling Group hug

Faye, allis not lost. If u do not water, some may recover. Immediately dig the ones still showing green centers, dry on towels in front of a gentle fan out of the sun. Let dry several days. Pull off dead/dying leaves gently while drying. Get down to healthy tissue. Then replant rosettes that survived.

You need to act quickly to get them dry. The fan is more important than the towels. A garage floor is a good place tp dry them. Your pics show they can be saved (some of them)

Hurray! I agree with twit. I see life there Faye, still hope for them.
Commander Hay looks like a goner, but you won't know until you follow twit's instructions. There may still be life in all those brown leaves.

The job is done..well almost. I have them all up, each shaken good and in it's own paper bag along with the marker. They are in the garage until tomorrow and I will get back to them.Thumb of 2012-07-06/dahtzu/680fe6
Sure hope I can get them looking like this again. Thumb of 2012-07-06/dahtzu/34bfcf Have a long way to go. Starting over.
Thank you so much for your advice. And thank you too Janice for your offer. I will always be glad to pay postage for Semps. I'm nuts for them.

Faye, can you put a fan on them? The bags will slow the drying but a fan would speed the drying. I also think they should be on the floor if it is dry

Gosh Kate thank you so much. Right now looks like I have already lost many (crumbled in my hand). Some are like straw and some like a sponge.
Twit, going now to put bags on the dry floor. It is so hot in the garage now with the doors closed. Thank you all so much for helping me.
Just put this light fixtures planter together today. Thumb of 2012-07-07/dahtzu/2c9ba2

Oh, so sorry!

I had a bunch of lower leaves on my new babies go brown & crispy... realized it was only happening in the planters where I hadn't mulched with sand, where the leaves were in contact with damp potting mix. Now all the little semps have sand (coarse builder's sand, not play sand) surrounding them, and they're only in direct contact with the potting mix at the center/base of the rosette, so they can put down roots better. This seems to be working so far...

So when/if you put some back in the ground, try mulching with coarse sand or pea gravel so the edges of the rosette don't touch "regular" soil. Maybe that will help even if they get over-watered.

Group hug

The gravel/sand mulch also helps retain moisture in areas experiencing drought.

Faye, I did not realize your garage is hot. Is there a cooler place for them such as a basement or someplace shaded and dry, but cool?

Faye, sorry to hear about your chicks... Sad I had a few issues/losses myself. I feel real bad as they were given to me and I wanted to give them the best care and new home I could. *Blush* Hang in there!!! I'm hoping come fall all will be better and they will settle into their new environment easier when our CO sun and dry heat isn't going against them. Keep us posted on your new babies!!!
