Thanks everyone! I have liked bright colors since I was a child and that still lingers on with me now. I love orange and red and throw in some really YELLOW ones to make the others show up more and I'm a happy camper.

Sorry it's been so long since I chatted but I've been soooooo busy!

I took today off. I didn't call in sick or anything. My plants will just have to make it a day without me. First day I've took off since the first of May. This 14 hour a day, seven day a week thing, has gotten to be a whole lot too much for me.

I did get caught up with writing up all my crosses today but I'm 8 days behind on making labels. Tomorrow will be devoted to pod hunting, label making and spraying. It may take 2 days, but so be it, I've got to get within 4 days anyway. I get paranoid when I get this far behind.

Thursday I made just nearly 200 crosses and that was an exhausting day for me. By the time I got everything written down, made 100 tags and hung about the same on my plants and then hunted pods for another batch of tags, it was 10:30pm and I started at 5:30am. This is supposed to be fun and that day I cried I was soooooo tired. (Oh, I plum forgot about pictures, I guess I could have done it by flashlight Crying ) Yesterday I did about the same. Now--NOW!! I've decided I must sale some plants, finally I feel as though I can part with some of my babies. Ok, so it took a physical break to make up my mind but I can't handle this many. I don't know what a good quantity is for a nearly 60 year old woman(with fibromyalgia and daily pain that causes severe fatifue) to be able to take care of and still have some fun ocassionally is, but it's not 1500 pots!!!! So, this week, I will be putting together groups of plants that will be offered for sale. I was going to do a local plant sale earlier but bloom season hit full fledge, all at once, and I got so caught up in trying for seeds, there was no time to get ready for a sale at that time. Now, most plants aren't blooming, but I have seen many rebloom scapes putting on!!! I've never had rebloom since the first year of my plants being here. So, I suppose the feeding progam is working. I'm tickled pink that I'm getting rebloom.

So, advise from anybody??? And Thanks for everyone giving comments on my seedlings.
That makes a whole lot of tiredness go away Smiling Smiling

Mona, I think you have made a good decision to cut back. If I spent as many hours as you do doing everything I would say the heck with it. YES, it's supposed to be fun!! But be proud and pat yourself on the back for all you have done.

I get to James' around 6:30am each day and some days I'm done by 10:30am. We usually leave there no later than 2:30 or 3:00pm but lately it's been about 1:00; every once in awhile it may be later if we are in the middle of some big project.
That time includes taking photos, cutting old blooms, pollinating my daylilies (and now James' for seeds to sell), tagging, collecting pods, spraying (when it's time), a little weeding or other things that need to be done plus a lunch break thrown in.

How many daylilies are you pollinating a day and how many pollens are you using each day? Pick a certain amount that you want to work with (a reasonable number nodding ) and stick with those. And the rest, just enjoy the blooms.
Right now I'm using maybe 3 or 4 pollens. And I only use 2 on everything in one day (no more than 3 tops). My patterns get one pollen and everything else whether its eyed, reds, pastels, teeth get 1 pollen. I may use something different on my pastels which makes the 3rd pollen. I may have a few oddball crosses that I want to use something else on. Then when I pollenate James' blooms the teeth, patterns, spiders/UFs, and eyed get 1 pollen and the reds/purple, pastels get 1 pollen. Sometimes they all get just 1 pollen.
I start around 7 or 7:30 and I'm finished pollinating between 9:30 and 10:30 and that includes tagging.

If you are just making seed for yourself then set a limit on how many pods you make and then set a limit on how many seeds you plant. Just because you have seed doesn't mean they have to be planted. Yes I know it's hard because there the "what if this is a good one" thought in your head. Green Grin! I had seeds left from late pollinating last season that I was going to plant this year. Guess what I did with them? I sent them the the AHS International Seed Bank. I will have more than enough to plant this season, which I will start doing shortly because I have already harvested a bunch.

The big key is to set limits and stick with them. Just keep in mind that the less time spent in the garden doing a bagillion crosses and planting a bagillion seedlings is more time to relax and spend doing something else that you enjoy.

I really like the Cherry Valentine eyed seedlings.

Thank God my season is winding down now, I'm plumb wore out. It's just too too much for this 72 year old woman. I feel for you, set limits and take lots of breaks to cool off and rest, thats the only way I can function now.

The last two days have been a blessing to me. It's rained Sunday for about an hour and nearly 8 hours today. This gave me a big break, really big break. I've gotten my seeds labeled up til 5-27 and I've got two more days ready to make the labels so that's take about an hour and another hour to put them on tomorrow. This will get me up to 4 days from the date of the cross and that's about as close as I get. Any closer and they are just too small to try to put the labels on.

I too, am on the downhill side of bloom season. I've got loads of rebloom scapes but nothing like the last 4 weeks. May was like a runaway train!!!

My DH went to town today to get some painting supplies and he went by Staples for me. I broke my mic/headset that goes to my voice recorder last week. He tried one from Walmart, but it didn't fit. The one he got me at Staples fits the recorder and it also has an adapter for my PC and cell-phone. It was $15 but still, with all the adapters, it's worth it. While there he went to the discounted aisle and found the paper clips I use for marking my seed crosses. I've been giving $10 for 800 at Office Max, 8 colors. these are only 6 colors, but there are 1000 of them and they were on sale for only $3.00. That's 70% off plus an extra 200 clips. He got the only 5 packs here but that will be enough for next year. You might find the same at your local Staples.

I just got caught up on this thread and have to say you have some very impressive seedlings. Thanks so much for sharing them. Sounds like way too much work to me. What is you special feeding formula if you don't mind my asking?

I don't mind a bit telling you about my feeding. l got most of this from Michele. She's a prince among us daylily lovers!!!

I get my local small nursery to order a fertilizer called Florikan. It's a 16-4-12 forumla with many minor nutrients. It was recommended to me to use a formula that is a 3-1-2 slow released based fertilizer such as 18-6-12 but I couldn't find one locally that was right on this number. In fact, I couldn't find any that even got close that I could just buy off the shelf that were slow released. So, I went to a local family owned nursery that does grow alot of their own plants for public sale and they could get the Florikan out of Florida for me. This is actually a brand that Michele had recommended or it could have been Fred, but it was one of them. It's expensive, $92 for 50#. I think it's well worth the cost. A little goes a long way and it is supposed to last 9 months. I figure I'll get a good 6 months out of it anyway.

I grow my plants in 3, 5 and 7 gallon pots. I use about 2 tablespoons in a 5 gallon pot. I also put about a quarter cup of alfalfa pellets and a tablespoon of lime in each pot. I use the lime because I grow my plants in a mixture of "Miracle Grow" garden soil and pine mulch, about 50-50. I read that with this much pine mulch I needed to add lime to replace what the mulch used to break down with. Don't ask me why, you'll need to ask the ones that know this type stuff, I get confused on the effects that lime has on the ph. By the way, the lime and the alfalfa are very cheap. The alfalfa is a natural stimulant that causes the daylilies to multiply and believe me, they grow like crazy and divide like a rabbit!! There has been several threads about this on here.

This spring, because of #%@!!! fungus gnats, I started a spray program every 8-10 days for bugs, rust and fertilize with liquid MG at the same time. So far, it's working really great. I have skipped the bug spray a couple of times after I got all of them under control.

It's very possible that just adding the alfalfa pellets would do a world of good and they are very inexpensive.

If you have any question, please ask, if I can't answer, I'm sure someone on here can. Blessings to all, Mona
