Saw this article on patio "trends" on Apartment Therapy. Outsie wheter it be patios, balconies, gardens, yard, I am pretty much a do whatever you want that makes you happy kind of person. I do find it curious that an apartment website would take realtor information to determine what apartment dwellers should do rather than maybe note trends in buyer habits...which...on the surface might be a group unconcerned with buyer habits. Thoughts?

Full confession? I can't see a situation where there are too many plants. The wilder the better IMHO.

I have a friend in Minai who lived in an apartment, he is a world plant traveler and collector. His neighbor COMPLAINED about his plants because he had 'too many'. His response was to move to a house.

I understand it can happen, but I can't figure out:

1) how people think they have a right to complain about someone else having too many anything let alone plants,

2) who they think complaining to would be effective, and...

3) what sort of enforcement they're hoping to find.

I'd also bet good money they would be outraged if someone decided to dip into their business. nodding

Someone posted (I can;t remember if it was on NGA or elsewhere) that they had a lot of plants by their entryway and on an open lanai by their apartment and their neighbor would come over and 'rearrange' them to a way she 'thought they looked better'.

Just read the article, I have to say at least half of that article seems inaccurate...

There's still a lot of (younger) people who love the look of patio lights and flea market stuff especially because buying from flea markets is more environmentally friendly (according to popular media at least)

But also a patio full of plants seems like the way to go haha it's nice to have all that foliage and jungle-look

There are more than a handful of folks with a whole lot of gall unfortunately. I believe I'd have been more clear about my property, her place or lack thereof on my property, and my intentions after the notification.

@Dciau1

I agree with your assessment.

I think there is a lot of, "Oooh. I need something for click bait. Let me find someone who will say something salacious."

I do realize though there are many people who prefer straight lines, golf course lawn, and no rough. I have a friend in that camp. Can't stand anything but the sidewalks, and low cut lawn. He'd have a stroke over a dandelion or plantain. I dig up as much lawn as possible. It makes him anxious when he comes over. nodding

My neighbor used to ask me when I would make my back yard as nice as my front yard. I responded "It's a backyard and no, I will not make it nicer - it is green and great for my dogs." Green Grin!

I think the one downside to patio plants is if you live upstairs and you have a patio like we did and your water drains onto the patio below. Thumbs down

Agreed. I've seen even worse though. Two houses from me, a guy on the 3rd floor kept two pit bulls on the fire escape with only a baby gate and some chairs preventing them from going half past the 2nd floor. He never walked them and never cleaned up the mess. About once a week, when it would get really ripe, he would run a garden hose from his apartment out to the fire escape and blast it all downstairs. The trouble is, the door for the apartment on the first floor was directly underneath. His "cleaning" never extended to that area. You can image what it was like. Anyway, eventually the landlord found out and got rid of the problem tenant. People like that are the reason folks with animals have a hard time finding rentals that allow pets. It's not uncommon either. We've seen poor husbandry commonly, often from within the very building we were in. Between that and the people who get animals and let them roam free or even chain them 24/7 within yards, I just don't understand why people get them in the first place.

One of our dogs is a rescue that was chained outside, and in between used as a bait dog for fighting. Here, as in some other parts of the country, mosquitoes are actually a year round problem, and they spread heart worms. They never gave this dog any real vet care...her injuries from the ring were either just allowed to heal or given the home stitch up job. She was heart worm + when we got her and we had to get the shots for her. They were honest with us at the rescue, one of their volunteers heard about this dog and actually spirited it out from these sadist's yard. We don;t spread that around town though LOL

problem now is cameras. I tried to steal a duck from my neighbors yard only to find that the idiot had zip tied the cage shut so there was no way I could swipe it and make it look like it just accidentally got left opened. I was so mad. He got a very bad gash on his leg from a loose wire in the cage and the neighbor shot him a few days later. Idiot couldn't hit the broad side of a barn either. I actually cried I felt so sad for this bird. He was an 'easter toy' for their bratty grandkids. He lived 5 months in a 2x3 cage, never getting out even once after his 'novelty' wore off.

Anyway that had nothing to do w patios Rolling on the floor laughing

I don't care what trends anyone else is a slave to, I do what I want with my yard/patio, period.

We don't have a rule against death wishes but maybe we should. There is a line somewhere, and the comment above clearly is over it.

So about that patio.... This is my area before we tore it all out and burned it. Full of termites and the idiot who built it, put it over the crawl space entry so we couldn't get under the house. Rolling my eyes.

We are getting new siding this summer if things go according to plan, which they never do Rolling on the floor laughing

This is that same spot now. I want to build wooden steps and then put hostas along the house and then put some concrete paver stones for a table. Hubby wants to pour the entire thing into concrete but I don't want to spend the money. We don't entertain hardly, we never have company, I mean it is very rare. In fact we have lived here over 8 years and never had anyone over but our immediate family. My husband is the city slicker type, he spends 5 mins outdoors before complaining about bugs, and goes in.So I don't see the purpose of a huge expensive patio. It faces north which I love though, nice shaded area to sit for a rest.

I wonder why they put your crawl space entry under your patio door. Sounds like something the people who built our house would of done. Hilarious!

well we ended up creating a new one at a better place, and will fill this in later when we get the siding done. I imagine the access was created before anyone ever added a patio door, the house was built in 43 and has been added onto several times. The whole thing has been a mess to fix. But one day it will all be nice. We just put the new roof on in Dec. I have not had a kitchen since Memorial Day.
