Sorry to hear that Gina, it has been amazing he has been able to hold it off this long. Once the hospitals in Florida stopped masking it was only a matter of time. The entire staff in my primary care office has had Covid at least once.
Sending good vibes his case is a mild one.

Happy New Year, all. Gina, hope your hubs recovers quickly and completely.

Alice, I'm with you on the home fireworks thing. They're expensive (where do people get the money to waste on them??) dangerous, they stink and they cause so much terrible noise. They terrorize animals and birds, not to mention people like soldiers with PTSD . . . a lot of reasons to just outright ban them. We were picking up the trash from them left on the street on our walk this morning.

Happy to say the neighbors were relatively good about at least stopping the noise right after midnight. We used to have one that kept the silliness going until 2 or 3am.

When cities and Counties spend taxpayer money on a beautiful big public fireworks show, why people feel they must also set off their own fireworks is quite beyond me.

Happy new year to all!
It was raining here off and on all night, so only professional fireworks at midnight. Only 1.2" but enough to deter neighborhood noise. Hurray!

Lucky you on the rain Carol. We had hoping for a forecast humdinger of a thunderstorm but it blew through well south of us.

My fav cordyline which was well protected with Christmas lights and blankets came through the freeze well.

A cutting of the same plant I brought into the house that week does not look so hot but I believe it will root - eventually. Shrug!

This used to be a rhizomatous begonia with a 3' spread. Hard to believe it will return from what looks dead but it usually does.

The Loquat tree looks well but the fruit is history for this year.

Cannas and crinums are mush, they too will happily emerge come spring but what a mess that needs to be cleaned up in the meantime.
The hot weather we had right before the freeze has the roses thinking it is spring. It is going to be hard to prune back all the new growth but it is time to do it.

I think I am going to have to eat my Wheaties and maybe some anti anxiety meds as the pundits say to not cut anything back until March. Whistling

It will be a few days before I can tell if my plumerias have damaged tips.I couldn't cover all of the But so far they look firm! I took saved some plumeria cuttings as a back up.

I am thinking more and more in retiring in a truly tropical 🏝 area that has no freezing temps so I can plant all my desert roses and plumerias in the ground.

I am thinking positive, surely a lot will make it, our ground never freezes so anything that is root hardy will come back. If not, I have plenty of reasons to buy new plants.

Actually, I am thinking if we do move to a colder climate we will have an easier time just transporting tender plants twice a year. Sort of like you do, it would be the same zone. Here in N. FL we are in an iffy zone, not warm enough and too warm at times.

Here in the mushy not-frozen-at-all north (Michigan) it is expected to be 60 degrees today! We have had about a week above freezing, even at night. As a result, the roses and forsythia bushes have pushed out about 1" of new growth from their stems...I know that mature bushes have "back up" growing nodes, but it is hard to watch. We know that February's deep cold is sure to come.

Same here, my roses think it is spring and shooting new tender stems! When our weather changes back, these will wilt and roses are hard to cover.

If you would like, you can take a look at my most recent entry. If you like looking at ferns and mosses (And translucent ones!), definitely take a look! I'm having a terrible time ID'ing them, so let me know if you know anything about 'em.

If you want to try ID'ing them, you can do it on your own.... or....
Find a key online (I'm searching for one right now)
or..... go onto the iNat observations and look at observations from others in the same area

I am very busy right now, sorry about that. I may not be online much.

Wish I had been out in the yard cleaning up,today, it was a lovely 80 degrees. But I'm stuck indoors. My husband tested positive for covid last Saturday and I started to feel bad today and I tested positive too. I've had all the vaccines. Had the bivalent. Still got it. I'm not feeling real well, but hope it passes off soon. Do some plant stuff for me.

Group hug Gina, hope you have a very mild case and recover nicely, and soon! Keep us posted on your progress.

My pale Calendulas and dark petunias are recovering well from the cold.

It was such a perfect 80 degree day Gina, I am sorry you are having to put up with this covid nonsense now. Rest, keep the fluids up and maybe sit out on the porch and just savor your jungle from the chair.
My AZ son, who traveled by air over New Years, is feeling bad also, he has a sore throat and cough. He has tested twice using the home tests and came up negative each time. He is going to head to a pharmacy for the more accurate covid test or a flu test - just to make sure.

Hope you recover quickly, Gina. We're so far not infected, but we really still don't go out much.

A few interesting things blooming here. My lovely Eranthemum pulchellum is busting itself in full bloom, so satisfying to have these lovely blue flowers in the 'dead of winter' but I did cover it up during the cold snap.

I scored a huge bargain on some butterfly Amaryllis bulbs from Brent & Becky's end of season clearance. They were all sprouting when I got them so I potted them up, and here they are starting to bloom!
