Baron Girod de l'Ain is the one that really caught my eye. I'm a sucker for frilly edges and contrasting trim!

Went to the Calgary Horticultural Society annual garden show today. Great show and come home with a few roses. I'm excited to try Fragrant Plum.

I also got Blue Girl. They are already started to leaf out so I will pot them up and keep them in the greenhouse. We have snow for Wed and well below freezing temps at night still.

Joanne - You'll love 'em both. Blue Girl is my 2nd favorite behind Blue Bayou & Fragrant Plum smells WONDERFUL! And is SUCH a stately upright rose, too! Perfect for cutting!

Toni,
I enjoyed your article and comments about your blue roses so Blue Girl was the 1st one I picked out.

This was at Lowes. They were taking plants inside this morning, just 12 hours too late.

My yard to the west. I love snow, yes I do, and I'll admit I was hoping for another one. What I didn't want was the hailstorm. It hit the other side of town this time.

We got about 4" of snow out of this storm.. would have gotten a lot more if it had cooled down sooner. but it's mostly melted already. Another big reason why I haven't really shopped for plants.. 1) too much mulch in the way & 2) knew we were gonna get at least 1 more snow storm. And they're predicting another one on Wed? Blinking

No snow here, fortunately, but it has dropped 30 degrees since sunrise (74 - 44), and we are finally getting a little rain to go with the amazing wind.

What photo editing software do you use, Sue? You have the best rose photos.

It is going to storm here. It is 75'F now, but getting blustery. I was worried about a couple of roses, but as I dug them up, I saw baby new canes and healthy roots. Amazing after this winter. I could be a tester for hardy roses. My poor plants will have endured two moves and a polar vortex in one year! They will have really short canes, but they are alive. Wednesday will have a high of 48'F. Temps will drop below freezing Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights. We are getting March weather in April. At least the snow is gone!

I will have to enjoy your roses vicariously this year. It will be a while before mine recover.

I am catching up on my fellow rose junkies. I am not getting any new roses while my poor old ones are being moved (the two adorable minis I got on sale for 2.99 with a b1g1 coupon at shop rite don't count - an apricot and a lavender mini....and a gorgeous apricot begonia). I checked the body bags, but they were all knock outs (which don't come in apricot or lavender, if they did....)

Cindy, I grow lavaglut and like it very much, I am fussy about reds. lavaglut has a warm almost russet red that isn't garish and doesn't blue. I had planned to have Lavaglut, Wildeve and a future eyeconic rose or two in the same flower bed. I have seeds for cherry vanilla (or a similar named) phlox as well. I thought the warm peachy pink rose, russet red rose and eyeconic roses (pink lemonaide and maybe regular lemonaide) would be nice together. Wildeve is the ultimate survivor, she sailed thru winter in a big pot because I hurt my shoulder before I could get her planted (You may remember I had to cut the root in two places to fit her in the pot and the main root at its smallest part was as big as my wrist.) My wildeve is own root from Walmart. If they happened to have own root roses again, I would buy some, moving or not!

Zuzu, your wildeve is the pink color mine gets in the summertime. In cooler weather, she is more apricot (like the color of Abraham Darby, but with many more flowers). The kiss of yellow at the center of the petals is more pronounced in the summer also.

Sue, your new garden is gorgeous! I remember you sharing pictures of dirt and potted plants.

Off to google the free image software! I keep meaning to run thru the Adobe tutorials, but have other things to do.

Most of my roses that are blooming still have only one bloom or a few blooms, but California Dreamin' is going nuts!

Here are some from the last couple of days:

Abracadabra, Autumn Sunset, and Black Garnet:

Bob Woolley, Caramella (the hybrid tea, not the Caramel Fairy Tale shrub), and Comtesse de Segur:

Thumb of 2014-04-15/zuzu/a1cd4f

Dark Night (officially known as Garden Director Bartje Miller; I still cannot believe the colors of this rose), Devoniensis (a non-blurry photo this time), and Easter Basket:

Erfurt, First Prize (huge blooms! Probably the biggest in my garden), and Fragrant Hour:

Golden Showers, Grandmother's Hat, and Helen Hayes:

Kathryn Morley, Kleopatra (had to use a backdrop to get a non-blurry photo; this color sends my camera into a tizzy), and Lilian Austin:

Naga Belle, Nimbus, and a pretty Opening Night bud:

I'll finish in the next post. This one's getting perilously long.

Pearl, Penelope (hard to believe those buds could produce such a white bloom), and Reno:

Rose Gaujard, Sheila's Perfume, and Souvenir du Docteur Jamain:

Strawberry Romance (another one with huge blooms), Sundowner, and Sutter's Gold:

Tantalizing Red (silliest name ever for a mauve rose), Three Weddings, and World War II Memorial:

Gorgeous parade!
My roses should be in full bloom within a couple of weeks, so far I just have single ones opening here and there. I spotted a bloom deep within the middle of Lady Emma Hamilton, it was pink though, very unlike the usually coral peach. I picked it and took a photo I'll add tomorrow. If I hadn't known it came from LEH, no way I would have recognized it. Very fragrant too.

Ok, roadtrip to steal these two.... (actually, I'm hoping that my Dark Night survived the winter...)

Gorgeous photos, as usual, Sue. Hurray!

Lady Emma is so very pink in that shot! Several of my apricot and gold Austins throw out pinkish blooms now and then, especially this early in spring. I find that my roses show their truest colors in fall.

I don't think I've ever seen those spots on rose foliage before. Could it be rust? Maybe it's just the beginning of black spot and the spots will blend together and look more familiar.

Rooguchi is such a charmer!
