I just read about the fizz phenomena a few weeks ago on ATP someone said it was a early bloom stage called pubescence no joke. Asiatics have this too.

Not all martagons are fuzzy, and martagons are not the only lilies that display it. I'm splitting hairs here, but the phenomenon is best described as lanate (dense, curly, wavy, and entangled long hairs). Pubescence would be short straight hairs.

O K you martagon lovers,I have these that were planted 3 years ago and bloomed so beautifully last year

Thumb of 2014-06-09/ge1836/e103d1
Its an awful pix of last years leaves ,but my question is about the leaves on this years growth.
They seem to be lighter in color and some tips are turning yellow. We have had ample rain and the area was composted last winter.

I've "decide" that nearly all the martagon lilies in my first batch of seed I grew (from a seed exchange) were apomicticly produced. They are identical in every way. (The original seed packet was a mix from more than one donor.)

Excuse the neighbor's dying spruce branches in the background. I have permission to cut them back now, and I'll do it in another month.

Rick, not to deter from the nice Marts but I've got two spruce trees that look like your neighbors. The DNR guy told me that Spruce are becoming diseased with mites and I better start Spraying. He said a lot of native Spruce out West are dying from it. Have you heard that?

Patience is something I do have, but when you have lots of stuff going on (lots of different lilies and different kinds of plants), I am really not "waiting". I am to the point now that sometimes when something blooms, I've forgotten I still had it!
By the way, the white one is NOT a Lilium martagon album. It is a hybrid that happens to be white.

Regarding the spruce mites, I have heard of, but not seen them. My neighbor's spruces are Colorado spruce that by definition are intolerant of shade. For a long time, I kept my Korean Euodia tree trimmed away from them because I knew they wouldn't tolerate the shade, but as they grew into my "air space" and shaded my lily box more and more, I said to heck with that! So now the Colorado spruces (and my box) are lightly shaded by the Korean Euodia, and the spruces branches - not the whole trees - are dying. Whistling nodding

While Lilium martagon is on the downhill side of blooming, other lilies of the martagon section are in full swing.
Here are some of my hybrid results:

These are from a few different Lilium 'Super Tsing' seed pods that were open pollinated. I had very few compatible suitors back when the union occurred (2008). It's pretty clear these were pollinated by the natural hybrid that often masquerades as Lilium tsingtauense - but is really a hybrid of Lilium tsingtauense and Lilium disticum (and/or Lilium medeoloides).
The best ones...

I had done several crosses of Lilium martagon 'Amelita' (graciously received from Ramona) with pollen from Lilium 'Super Tsing' and had very poor success: only one pod grew. This one I had labeled as a dirty pollination. It had been open and unprotected (from pollinating insects or hummingbirds) for about an hour before I pollinated and covered it so no further contamination could occur. It's a little early to speculate on what the parent(s) might be. The variety is stunning. For most of these, this is the first time they have bloomed. As Super Tsing is half Lilium martagon (of unnamed genetics), it is possible there was no contamination at all. But either way, I'm really excited! I've been doing a lot of pollinating now, especially with that last one! nodding

Wow! What a fantastic bunch of seedlings. I wonder if your intended pollen benefitted from a little contamination that acted as incidental mentor? The flower forms are so fresh. I especially love the spidery lemon. What a sublime baby. Lovey dubby
