So, Becky, no soil at all? Just the kitty litter and a pond tab fertilizer? No soil, LOL?

Polly - Nope! No soil at all. Just that clay kitty litter. Don't use other kitty litter though. Only the red bag one. Other kitty litters have other additives that might kill the water lilies.

The past couple of years we've had such cold temps during the Winter that I lost all my water lilies except the Mexicana and maybe one other hardy. I had ice covering the tops of both of my pre-formed ponds and all my water containers. Luckily, my Lotus came back, but all my water lilies didn't except the Mexicana and maybe one other yellow blooming hardy, too. I had some really nice tropical water lilies, but lost them all. I had all the hardies in one container and all the tropicals in another. Only the yellow blooming hardies came back.

When I pulled up the pots in late Winter/early Spring, there was nothing except rotting roots in the tropical water lily pond. It really was a bummer! I live on the east coast of central Florida, so you'd think they would've been okay here, but they weren't. The Mexicana did indeed spread and make new babies. I will continue to keep that cultivar because it has been reliable for me and it is perfect for my pond fish. Even when the temps were freezing for days and then warmed up shortly after, the Mexicana started putting out pads. I was amazed! And they started blooming in March! I do think they could be invasive, so that is why I have them separated from all my other water lilies. They have their own pre-form pond to go wild in! I rarely fertilize them. Throwing in a pond tab or two occasionally. The fish swim around them and I can still see them because the pads raise up above the water yet hide the fish from birds flying overhead. They also cover the entire small round pond and help shade the black pre-formed pond from the heat of the sun. The water is crystal clear too. I believe the water lilies help keep the water clean. To me they are the perfect water lily if you want fish in a pond. But I have too many at the end of each year, so I need to either toss some in the trash or find new homes for them. They are so easy to care for! I just let them go wild in the pond. Smiling Another positive thing about them ... I get lots and lots of tadpoles which will eat my water lilies. The Mexicana grow so fast that I never hardly notice all the missing and eaten pads, unless I look down into the water and see the tadpoles eating them. LOL! My Mexicana pond always looks the best! :-)

I do love the tropicals though. So do the tadpoles! I get in on the Cubits group co-ops through Texas Water Lily and get them so cheap that it doesn't matter if I have to replace them every year. Smiling http://texaswaterlilies.com/

I love Texas Waterlilies. One of my favorite water plant vendors.

I have yet to come up with a way to tag my waterlilies so that I can still tell what they are after a couple years, so I have no idea what this hardy is, but it's been blooming a lot lately. Probably purchased originally from Texas Waterlilies. And we need more waterlily pictures around here, I think. Thumbs up

Paul - Beautiful bloom! The dang tadpoles are eating my bloom buds that are under water. I need to get the net out and scoop the tadpoles out and put them in the "other" pond with the Mexicana water lilies. They can't destroy those aggressive water lilies! LOL!

May I suggest a great website for extensive information about water lilies. This is my go to website when I need information:

http://www.victoria-adventure....

They also have a large database of named water lilies with photos:
http://www.victoria-adventure....

And their site covers lots of information about other water plants, too:
http://www.victoria-adventure....

And you can join (for free!) the Water Gardeners International club at http://www.watergardenersinter... . Which Victoria Adventures helps to sponsor, promote, and participate in!

I've never noticed my tadpoles eating the buds, though I have far fewer from the sounds of it. They are welcome here because the frogs are non invasive and help with pest control. I didn't even realize frogs could get out of hand, so I'm sorry to hear about your trouble.

Victoria Adventure always leaves me wanting to build bigger ponds and plant larger plants. Very dangerous website for me, that one.

Victoria adventure is excellent. Makes me want more plants. The 37 varieties I have now are not enough!

Like PSA, I don't have a problem with tadpoles because i don't have any at all. Hawaii only has a couple of frog/toad species. All are introduced and somewhat invasive here.

Carolyn - A sticky thread for this forum would be great and adding the link to Victoria adventures and Water Gardeners International would be two very good resources to list in a sticky thread. Just a suggestion.

If I only had a few tadpoles, not problemo. But I have thousands and they have to have something to eat. So they eat my plants. Tadpoles seem to eat constantly from what it appears. I lost 2 more bloom buds today from them. I scooped out as many as I could and transferred them to the Mexicana pond. They can't kill the Mexicana like they can the tropical water lilies. Hilarious! Hilarious! Hilarious! It's rather frustrating because the Southern Leopard Frogs are literally living in the two ponds. I think they hop back and forth laying more eggs! Ugh! Arc en Ciel is one of the easiest waterlilies to identify, because it is more often grown for its variegated leaves, but I have been impressed with its recent blooms:

I agree I agree Those are stunning, Paul!

I don't know if I will get blooms on mine! The darn tadpoles are eating mine! Grrrr ... I keep scooping the tadpoles out of the tropical lily pond and adding them to the other pond with Mexicana, but there are just too many tadpoles to catch them all! Here is what the beautiful healthy leaves look like after the tadpoles eat them. Just the leaf skeleton left! Sad

I overwintered Tropical Water Lilies in containers of damp sand this year. It was my first attempt at trying this. I was looking at the containers the other day but didn't open them yet to see how they are doing.

I gave up on the kitty litter because my fish dump it all over the bottom of the pond which is a black liner. Makes a terrible mess. I went back to pea gravel and I got those 'once a summer' fertilizer stakes last fall. The ones Carolyn suggested. Am looking forward to this summer to see how they do.

I overwintered my water lilies by leaving them outside in big rubbermaid tubs. I'm really amazed that the tubs didn't crack when I had ice on the top for a few days. They are just those 18 gallon $5 tubs made for storing decorations and such. The water lilies have already sent new leaves up to the top! Hurray!

Hopefully next winter that's what I'll be able to do. We're about finished digging the new pond, and my husband accidentally made the center 5' deep. He said the backhoe sunk down while he was working, and thinks maybe the water table is that high, because that area now has water! I'm thinking I'll push the pots towards that deeper area in late fall, but use the outer parts the rest of the year so I can get to them without swimming. Rolling my eyes.

My water lily garden of last year was a flop. Raccoons pulled my plants out so many times that eventually there were none left. It was still an enjoyable and pretty little place, with the fountain and the fish, but I didn't get even one lily bloom. I have to Hilarious! because this is exactly what I expected to happen. Fun little experiment, however. Smiling

I don't know if you are planning on having koi, but the deeper, the better. Apparently koi use different muscles to swim from top to bottom, than they do to swim horizontally along a straight plane. This goes a long way to keeping them fit and thus healthier. How big do you plan on your pond to be?

Chelle - how deep is your pond? I have heard that Racccoons can cause quite a mess....

No koi, no no no. they are just real expensive egret and heron food around here. I had a beautiful koi pond at my last house and the only way I could keep fish in it was to completely cover the pond with netting. We have a 2-3 acre pond with big catfish and bass which I never get to see unless they're on a hook. Sticking tongue out
If I could somehow dig an 8' deep pond with straight edges and no plants, I might have a chance at keeping koi again. But if I go to that much trouble, it's going to be a place for me to swim!
