WRT Etsy, I have purchased several hundred $ of scores of seed varieties from perhaps 3 dozen vendors. Was always pleased. Art would fit in well there since artsy stuff was how they got their start and it is still their mainstay. There have been a few occasions when I found something on Etsy, not available on Ebay.

I don't care much for Amazon other than books. I have made perhaps a dozen purchases and was unhappy with virtually all of them other than books. For books, I have been 100 % joyful.

As a long time Facebook user, I think that would definitely be worth investigating. I personally have never purchased from there.

@Drdawg - do you have a problem with Ebay? I have made thousands of $ of purchases over several hundred transactions. On only one time did I have a problem and it was quickly fixed.

I have problems with eBay, David, but it has nothing to do with customer-care. They punish store-owners with the least things (that they deem against their rules)and any contact with them is via foreign employees that simply read script to me.

I fully understand! My own dealings with them directly were caused by a screw up on their part. Sorry - I don't like customer service with "Jane" who lives on the other side of the planet and could not possibly answer a question out of order from their script. I never ever received Joy.

Were I you I would give consideration to both Etsy and Facebook. Perhaps Etsy has similar problems to Ebay - doanno. But they have much less exposure than Ebay.

Facebook potentially could give you great exposure. I personally have never used Facebook for anything plant related. Two searches regarding seeds popped up a group in Perth Australia and some where in Great Britain.

Good luck

I have started listing a few plants on ETSY, but as you stated, there is less exposure there. I don't know about having to deal with "rules violations" with ETSY. I sure have had (bad) experiences with eBay though. I too don't really use FB to sell anything. I just don't have the time to list on multiple venues. Just keeping up with what I have to do takes an incredible amount of time. That's the problem being a hobbyist grower with one employee...............me. Sighing!

LocalHarvest. It's popular among the small and family farmers, and bakers.

Ken I love orchids but they are one of the few plants that I can not grow and get the super simple ones. Have the orchid book for dummies and nothing seems to help I have had success with everything except bonsai and orchids.

How about posting some pictures so I can drool

I agree orchids are tough for me. I bought two Itty bitty ones from Home Depot last year and one died (I over-watered it and didn't realize the roots were rotting out) and I brought the other one back from the brink, but I wouldn't say it is completely out of the woods yet. I'd love to see pictures of yours. Smiling

DnD - when you try to bring one back from the brink, it can easily take a year. Or more.

Unfortunately, the vast majority of orchids sold in the big-box stores will be Phalaenopsis. For me at least, Phal. are more difficult to grow than the entire spectrum of Cattleya alliance orchids. To make matters worse, the way the vast majority of Phal. are packaged for sale makes them very prone to "drowning". When I lecture to garden clubs, one question is always asked: "Why do my Phal. plants always die after blooming?" I explain that the plants were probably sold in a poorly draining pot (if drainage at all!) and that the roots were more than likely packed with wet sphagnum moss. Unless one is awfully careful and somewhat knowledgeable about the use of sphagnum, this moss is a sure killer for the majority of orchids.

Etsy is a great site. It's easy to use, and has a lot of buyers and sellers. I do both there. It's worth checking it out.

Yeppers Ken. If I buy a "rescue" Phal, as soon as I get it home, I remove the packing and repot in a mix of bark & coir. The packed in moss IS a killer if one leaves the plant in it.

And yes, while many may be in a clear plastic pot (packed in moss) there is often an outer cover or container so the Phal roots are sitting in an inch or 2 of water.

I have had an Etsy shop for 3 years for Wedding Silk Florals, Preserved and some decor it has been very successful. I buy regularly seeds, plants, art, collectibles, and gifts from Etsy. I highly recommend you try opening a shop. Here is my shop on Etsy as an example for you. https://www.etsy.com/shop/Silk... I have spent money on other websites, advertising, and many other applications, nothing has brought me more business than Etsy. If you start your own website you have to advertise to get people to your site this takes lots of money, and time. With an Etsy shop, they pay for all the advertising, you pay .20 per listing every 3months, and a percentage for the payment processing which you are going to pay with any site. Believe me in 4 years I have tried just about everything out there and have wasted a lot of money. Facebook is nice to have as a web prescence but it has not brought me 1 sale in 3 years though I have 3100 followers. Etsy has brought me more than 1000 sales, over 600 on the site and more than 400 leads that I processed from my website. Hope this info helps in your decision, Kim

I know there's a group on Facebook for hosta sales and auctions. They are private so you have to ask to join, but you just send a message to the owner and wait for a response.

PS nearly all the plant sellers on etsy are RESELLERS, they do not know a martagon from and oriental. how come a site specializing in "homemade" has so many resellers is beyond me......
