Lilylady, most people that have bought daylilies for awhile know that the northern sellers will (usually) not send the great leeks of the south, unless they are green house grown. Even the huge fans of the south will shrink under most regular garden conditions. Just tell folks you are in the north and make sure you mention in the listing if the fans usually run small so that people know what to expect.

These are all Lily Auction (LA) sellers from whom I have personally bought seeds and was satisfied with what I received. I put this list together in 2009 and some of them may not sell seeds at this point.

Found the Plant list that I had put together previously. It also was made in 2009. These are all sellers that I have personally bought plants from and was satisfied. There are a few sellers from purchases made after 2009 that I may need to add so if I have bought from you since then and your name is not on this list it is just an oversight. There have only been one or two sellers that I was not happy with and they were from 2009.

Laura, those last two on your list, Bob Selman and Bill Maryott, are my absolute two favorites anywhere, anytime. Robin Calderon is the third of my top three. She is earlybird on the LA.

I do agree that people who leave feedback from plants that they have received from northern growers must take into consideration that we are at least a month behind southern grown plants as far as size. And as was stated before, dips and spider dips normally have smaller fans most of the time.

I think it's important that as a northern seller, or selling dips/ spiders, that a comment, reminder or statement be made that the fans are smaller. Granted, once someone has bought a lot of daylilies, they should know. But newbies don't (I didn't when I started, then I got a bunch of leeks, which made me think ALL of them come that way!) I am pretty laid back, and even when I got small single fans, I didn't care - I was happy getting healthy looking plants. But not everyone is like me.

Glad to hear the positive info on chocolatechiphorses - I have thought about bidding on some of theirs recently. I trust my friends here, more than I trust the feedback on the LA.

I noticed some northern sellers do say the fans are smaller than from more southerly gardens. The trick is for the potential bidder to READ the auction! Hilarious!

In my humble opinion, all you can do is describe your plants as best you can. A picture is worth a million words on the Lily Auction. I buy seedlings a lot on the auction. I have bought 6 month seedlings that were pencil size or maybe not even that big.. The seller has pictures showing that his seedlings will be pencil size. I was happy with what I recieved. If I buy a two year old seedling, I expect it to be a grown plant. It may be pencil size, but it should have a very healthy root system.

I have got many huge plants from the South. I was very happy with them. If I buy from the North, I expect size to be a normal size, maybe thumb size. I don't know how big your plants are, but if you could post a picture, then it eliminates all questions.

I'm going to sell some plants too. I'm waiting to get good photos of the plants before I sell them.

Don't be afraid to sell on the LIly Auction. I think you will be happy with most of the people. I find the vast majority of gardeners to be fair and honest folks. Mind you I said most!!! If there is a bad one, I'll find them. It's just my nature!!!

Jump in! Have Fun!

One thing that has not been mentioned is that some daylilies naturally make smaller fans than others. I have a daylily called Something Angelic that makes VERY small fans and has a small bloom. I recently sold some of it and told the buyer what to expect. I sent mature fans with great root systems but the fans were short and small. They simply don't get bigger here.

My garden is in TN, zone 6 and we don't get snow cover in the winter. The evergreens and semi evergreens grow, then get killed back by a hard freeze, then put out new foliage and then it gets killed back. This happens over and over during the winter and by spring, the plants have use up much of their stored energy and the fans are much smaller in the spring than they were in the fall. It takes a while for them to regain. normal size. Pat Stamile posted about this very thing recently on the Robin. In the deep south, the daylilies can continue ue to grow all winter without getting killed back, so their fans are huge when shipped.

I have received some monster fans from some Southern and Mid.. sellers and I must tell you within the same growing season and being cared for with lots of good soil, water, fertilizer and TLC they shrink to a smaller size. I don't know if it is the strength of the sunlight here VS South or night temps. being cooler, but it happens on all of them. DL take longer to adjust in the N. and may be 2-3 years to bloom, but I do not think it matters if they are monsters from the S. or puny N. ones. . This being said I would hope others would give them a chance from a N. seller as they have been tested in harsher weather and are of hardier stock than some S. ones and I honestly have not seen a difference in them once they are planted. Both have advantages and Disadvantages. What is surprising is how some of the Evergreen ones can be as hardy as they are.

I may have just had my first really bad LA experience. Over the winter I won a number of daylilies from a seller I've never bought from, but had good ratings. I never received my order and they're not answering any of my several emails. Their last feedback is from Nov. 2011, so I guess I'm not the only one who didn't get an order. I contacted LA support and they're not getting any answers from them through email either. They gave me their phone number. So I guess my next step will be to try to call them. Angry

While not from the LA, I'm having a similar problem from someone I bought from right here on this website. Was told they'd ship my plant earlier in May. Though I've never ordered from this person before, they have a website. No plant came and now they aren't answering my t-mails even as they continue to post in the forums.

Guess from now on I'll have to stick with those I already have experience with.

Yes, that's too bad. The last order I received on Tuesday was in bad shape. I asked the seller if he could wait and ship after the holiday but he shipped on Wednesday, which means the plant was in the mail for 6 days. Needless to say, it didn't look to healthy when it arrived.

Joy I would ask the person right here on the forum where your plant is since they won't answer your t-mails. The person must have said here that they are selling plants so I see nothing wrong with asking your question after all it is their responsibility to let you know what is going on.

Well, Unfortunately, it looks like I can give you the name of the bad LA seller now. Mike Longo at the Lily Auction will be calling the police in the seller's home town. No one has heard from him. He's not answering anyone's email and his phone has been disconnected. He is Aginn - Steven McGinniss of Watsontown, Pa. I doubt he'll be able to sell on the LA again. But just in-case he sells somewhere else, perhaps putting his name out there will help to prevent anyone else from being ripped off.

Thanx for the heads up on him. Sorry you were swindled. Most of the LA is great, unfortunately there are bad apples in every bunch. Don't let it discourage you from others. Good luck, maybe once his hometown police get involved you'll get your money back.( fingers crossed for you).
