Yes that could be challenging, can you withhold water like when it's in a regular planting mix? Shrug!

Yeah I think I can, either I pour out the remaining water or just wait till the roots gets it all. But it will be awhile to dry since the rocks wicks and holds water.

I think I would pour the water out, let it dry awhile, then put it in a cool dark closet.

6 to 8 weeks, when the foliage turns yellow cut it down to about 3 inches. Realize that I am no expert seeing as last year was the first bulbs I had grown, they bloomed in January, then I let them grow in a sunny window until September, I then withheld water, takes a long time for those leaves to yellow, then I was told you should remove them from the pots which I did, cleaned the bulbs up and put them in a cool dark cupboard for about 8 weeks, great success as one is blooming, the other I took out later has a nice scape with a large bud. Anyway that is my experience, good luck with yours..

I am putting this plant now inside a closet, root zone as dry as it can get. Have done similar to another amaryllis and that one is now with a bud actively growing.

So keeping fingers crossed..will see how it goes after a month. Smiling

Tarev, it's amazing how long those leaves can stay green, as soon as I noticed a little yellow in the leaves I cut them back to about 4 inches.

Yeah, I was hoping with no sunlight it will at least turn yellow..but no this one is a true fighter...so I will take note of that, as soon as I see even a hint of yellowing, I will cut off the leaves.

I have been told that amaryllis need no "down time" unless you are trying to force Christmas blooms. I don't care when they bloom, so when I took them out of the ground last fall I potted them up. They are none the worse for wear.

Anna, I just started growing them last year and I read so much conflicting advice on growing them it was totally confusing. Shrug! I must say it was wonderful to have those beautiful blooms during bleak December, January and February. Green Grin!

When do yours start blooming.?

Hi Anna, I also read that about amaryllis not needing a downtime..and it makes sense so when I used this media I figured, it will be a part of this experiment too, if it will survive this manner of planting and if it will re-bloom in this media. But it has been over a year, and I guess my patience is wearing thin..so doing this hide in the cabinet trick. Even my amaryllis outdoors has been stingy with blooms..if they do not do anything this Spring either, they will be going into the cabinet too Hilarious!

Oh, they just kinda do their own thing. I suppose they might be a bit stingy now since I didn't give them all of the care they deserved last summer. My bad!

My thinking is, if they do not bloom at all, after all my efforts and attempts...another kind of plant will take their place Hilarious!

But I do have one right now, planted in a clay pot of its own, and is making a bloom, just waiting for the bud to open..at least something to appease my long wait Big Grin

Just some update, initially I planned to leave alone this plant inside the cabinet till end of April, but I changed my mind seeing the leaves have wilted already as planned. And I was thinking, it seems the plant does not really need a hard rest, just a bit of dry rest, the roots are still looking quite okay.
So here it is last 03April, after taking it out of the cabinet, with the leaves wilted, gave it some trimming.
Thumb of 2013-04-16/tarev/0e1634 Thumb of 2013-04-16/tarev/3aff99
The roots looks okay, still green, I guess there is some moisture left with the hydroton rocks and the remnants of the water gel beads:
Thumb of 2013-04-16/tarev/716e00

So after that placed it near the window still with no added water, and on 12Apr gave some watering, water with some super thrive. As always keeping the level of water just at the root zone: Even before the watering, some newer roots are coming out already.

I took another photo on 15Apr, a new leaf growth is getting ready..and roots are deeper green happily drinking away.

Now waiting if this one will try for a bloom..keeping fingers crossed..
