So glad you're keeping us updated on this experiment. Really interesting!

Today, I have decided to repot my amaryllis, found this nice bigger glass container, wider mouth, wider base a week ago.
Thumb of 2014-05-06/tarev/d76284

Current container is already getting too tight for the bulb. It has been in this container anyways for over 2 years now, might as well move it while it can still slide off without breaking the glass.
I have also gathered some more hydroton clay rocks washed them off, and have some water storing crystals soaked overnight to make them swollen.
Thumb of 2014-05-06/tarev/62d8ff
Have gently pulled out the plant, and here is how the roots look like: have wrapped around nicely around the rocks.
Thumb of 2014-05-06/tarev/d94049 Thumb of 2014-05-06/tarev/661c5d

So gently prying away the rocks, feels relaxing doing this, Big Grin somehow reminds me of cleaning out orchid roots. The roots free of the rocks now. Then I took the old rocks and washed it several times too, so I can reuse them.
Thumb of 2014-05-06/tarev/50ce27

Removing some of the older dead roots, and some more old skin of the bulb: I only removed the skin I can scrape off easily, without bruising the bulb.
Thumb of 2014-05-06/tarev/0fa168

I just realized, with the leaves still present, makes it easier to hold the plant as I gently pour in the clay rocks with water crystals into the new container. Then adding some water, this time too, I added a few drops of houseplant fertilizer, keeping the water below the bulb. Have to add some glass rocks, since the container is a bit wider, and I ran out of clay rocks, just using the glass rocks for now for stability of the bulb till it anchors itself later.

Here it is now:

Now will wait a couple of weeks to see how the plant likes it. Smiling

My update for this June 2014:

The whole plant looks pretty much the same
Thumb of 2014-06-02/tarev/5ff5b7

Strappy leaf still looks olive greenish, not to long, nor does it look dried out
Thumb of 2014-06-02/tarev/eb0253

Collar or neck..or how do you call that part, still maintained its green color for the greater part
Thumb of 2014-06-02/tarev/efb35a

Roots looks okay, light green to white. Some got transparent, which is normal as it grows old but it is still getting moisture.
Thumb of 2014-06-02/tarev/5c2e82 Thumb of 2014-06-02/tarev/aa73ba

This plant remains at my south facing window, the warmest and brightest part of the house. Maybe sometime I will bring it downstairs during a party as centerpiece Smiling

Time to update status of this Amaryllis. I moved the plant into our bath tub during summer, no one using it anyways. Plus it gets good bright eastern light there. It has managed to make one new leaf.

So Fall is here, eventually I will move this to the other room with a south facing window.

Its current photo as of 24Sept2014
In the tub:
Thumb of 2014-09-24/tarev/5b7db1

Root zone area, looks good, roots quite green
Thumb of 2014-09-24/tarev/1ea21a Thumb of 2014-09-24/tarev/6fa87c

Neck area looks okay, seeing reddish tints at the base of the leaves. Makes me excited seeing reddish tint like that..with my other plants that are not amaryllis, sometimes it tells me the plant is getting ready to push a bloom stalk..don't really know if it is the same with amaryllis. Nice to hope for it though Smiling
Thumb of 2014-09-24/tarev/342a0c

The bulb looks quite healthy too, quite green and not too much dried out skin
Thumb of 2014-09-24/tarev/bca7fd

So bulb has adjusted quite well in the new container this past summer. Will make updates later. Smiling

This is such an interesting experiment! And I love that you can see the condition of the bulb at all times.

Thanks woofie! Smiling On this part of my experiment, I want to know now, the effect of not giving it much fertilizer. So far I have only given it a few drops and some superthrive when I made the gel beads swollen, then when I see the water level is almost gone, just replenish with some more water. And the saga continues on.. Smiling

Have moved the plant to the other room now..with more south sun..have also replenished some water, still keeping bulb above the water line.

Remembering how hot it is there..have put that piece of paper to cover some of the root section
Thumb of 2014-09-24/tarev/d91a16

I can see some fat roots circling below Smiling

Time for a November update. Nothing much going on, plant kept its leaves, and roots growing nicely. It has been quite overcast these past few days as we are finally getting much needed rain.

Amaryllis now has company, my orchids, plumie, adenium, stapelia, pineapple and ficus are in the same room for the cold season.

Tarev, can you advise the dimension of your glass container (diameter and height) and the A. bulb in it (diameter)? Thank you.

I think I will start giving all my amaryllis, both in soil and in clay rocks a dry rest time. Reading more about it, it seems it prods them to make blooms. So no watering for now. Reviewing all my postings and comparing it with what I am reading about its culture, I realize, oops, so that's why it is not being cooperative. Looking back too, its relative bulb, the Hymenocallis Ismene Festalis undergoes similar dry rest here, and only when I start plying it with water after giving it a rest then it makes the leaves and blooms in mid to late summer.
My other new plant, which is related to it, Clivia, also needs to be dry during winter..okay..got the message... Smiling

So not a cold treatment like what most Fall bulbs do..just a dry winter rest.

I hope so too Margaret...felt good trimming off the leaves of my amaryllis in soil/container..then removing some of those old tunic..looks cleaner now. Hopefully it will make the bulb feel time to reproduce Big Grin

I have a clivia and I don't give it a "rest". I keep watering it all winter and it blooms quite nicely for me. I suppose I should split it, it's in a 16 inch pot and waaaay rootbound. LOL
