I've been a customer for a couple years and Ive noticed a couple things that turned me off, but as a bargain shopper I always let it slide before.
but today, the first time in many orders I attempted to take advantage of their "100% satisfaction guarantee" and realized in reality it's a 0% guarantee and wanted to share my experiences.
the first thing I noticed about them that gave me the willies is any product review that isn't 5 star is not published on their website. I bought ~300 tulips and reviewed any that were either exceptional or a bit off ( for example, very short, or color was off). every 5 star review was published, but none of the lower scores. I further realized this is a pattern, all the reviews on their site are 4 or 5 stars, and the ones for the bulbs that bloomed in an incorrect color or underperformed ONLY contained reviews about "received healthy bulbs, can't wait to see them in spring," and do not contain a single comment about how they actually bloom... often there are many years of comments like this. where the bulbs that bloomed well for me had many positive comments about actual performance not just quick shipping or fat bulbs.. so they are obviously "curating" reviews and must be aware of issues with certain varieties and suppliers that they simply won't address. Specifically I remember what was advertised as a tall white tulip coming up short and decidedly yellow.. not cream, or a yellow throat... a yellow tulip, and a mix of two that were supposed to be a dark purple and a white with a matching dark purple flame on the petals. the purple came up perfectly, but the white has a lipstick/ fire engine red flame, not at all purple. all in, that bunch was pretty jarring. what should have been a 75 tulip white purple grouping turned out to be a purple, white& red and yellow. it was not pleasant. none of those reviews ever went live on the site, and neither of these had any reviews from anyone that commented on the actual blooms.

the issue that brought me here today was ranunculus and anemone corms I pre-ordered in late May of 2022 for fall planting. I bought 250 total at no small expense. in error they sent one pack immediately- in June ( which is not a big deal, they can be stored dry and cool for months... ). the rest in September.
these grow similar to pansies, they need temps in 40-60 to sprout, take ~10-12 weeks to begin to set blooms, and will continue to bloom for about 8 more weeks as long as temps stay under ~75 to 80. they can survive a light frost, but nothing under about 25 degrees.. net net, you need 5 months over 25, below high 70s, which basically means zone 8. anywhere else you need to do some finagling with greenhouses, row cover, artificial lights, etc... I have gotten good at this and have mine growing now in my attached unheated greenhouse. of the seven varieties I ordered, 2 did not grow at all, and a third have about a 50% sprout rate with pretty anemic growth. FYI, I made a similar order from longfield and planted them all at the same time/conditions and have excellent results from longfield on all but one variety. I also have good results from the corms I saved from last spring when they went dormant in June.

so, I contacted tulip world and here's the net net of my discussion. No guarantee.
The set they sent in June, guarantee only applies if I complained before october 1, 2022 because they are "spring planted" in my zone (if I planted these in June, there's NO WAY any would ever grow) the fall shipment would not be eligible for coverage "because it is too early to file a claim" AND since they are not hardy in my zone, despite photographic evidence of more than 500 ranunculus and anemones growing happily in my greenhouse ready for spring planting, the guarantee doesn't apply anyway because my zone is outside of their hardiness zone- blind to greenhouse and photo evidence. good thing I didn't order amaryllis from them.

it was a completely preposterous conversation.. entirely illogical. it's too early to complain, it's too late to complain, they need 2 weeks of 40-50 degrees to sprout but you should have planted them in June, when they are both covered by our guarantee, but also guaranteed to never grow and should never have bought them in the fall to grow correctly because we only guarantee things in zones where they are winter hardy and times where they are guaranteed to fail.. yes, our site says they are suitable for zone 7.. if it isn't hardy we don't cover it...it was bizarre... they will sell you, ship you, tell you they are suitable (which bothers me to begin with- because that's a stretch when they don't give you complete information and deny the truth when it's not that simple) then blame YOU for a less than ideal outcome under ideal conditions.. it's nuts. they only guarantee if you plant in ground (their "natural conditions" even if those conditions are guaranteed to fail!

I just realized the Anemone, the most disappointing, as not a single one sprouted, should have been covered, as they advertised them hearty in my zone ( that's arguable..). so back to their web site.

As per Lynn H. they will not accept a request to honor their "100% satisfaction guarantee unless you plant in ground, no matter how inappropriate, nor will they honor a request BEFORE May ( "Its too early") OR AFTER May, as June 1 the guarantee is expired... Im serious.. this is the actual conversation I had.

I will tell you, with many other places, like longfield and brecks, i've had great responses with occasional complaints- I'd rather deal with my health insurance company than this dumpster fire Turkish bazaar haggling over $25 retail, it's actually way less than current coupons available online and I don't understand why their fighting me, a repeat and grossly irresponsible overspender.. but I guess you have companies that try to be upfront, truthful, and make lifelong customers, and those that count pennies instead of dollars.

I ordered from them 2 years ago. Tall bearded iris. Planted and had no problems. Ordered again this year. 2 day lily varieties. I hope I don't have any problems. I usually order from Longfield because they're near me and the climate is the same. However last year I had poor results from the dahlias I ordered and the lilies although the lilies were probably my fault. The lilies stated bloom time was mid summer with extended bloom. And fragrant. Not one had any fragrence! The dahlias limped along and I never got any flowers on at least 2 different plants. Karma Gold disappeared completely. All the lilies opened quickly -in June-and were finished with flowers shortly after. 3 did not come up. Planted some in a different bed at the same time and nothing again. Longfield contacted me about one of their new lilies that I had ordered and I told them I couldn't give them a review because the lily did not come up. I also complained about the non growth on the dahlias and they asked me if I wanted a refund with no hassles. I did not want the refund. But they re a good company to deal with in this respect. Refunds with out struggling. and good customer service. I had several emails going back and forth about the dahlias and the quirky lilies and I was satisfied with the answers I got.

I mail order plant stock, bare root stock, seeds & bulbs a lot, for over 45 years, various venders.
If there is a problem, when I contact the vendor, I keep notes. When I follow their rules, I expect to receive respect and a satisfying result.
My orders are always on my charge card. If I don't receive a satisfactory result, I file a claim with my charge card.
I have a vender "Black List". When I lecture at different garden events, a segment of my syllabus includes how to select a good vendor, and examples of orders gone south.

Yes always order on a charge card not a debit card. If an order goes wrong the charge card company will usually take care of the issue for you quickly. A debit card is another story altogether. I keep track of what I ordered, from who and how I paid -what credit card was used. The Tulip World order has already been paid for so I can assume that the plants will be coming soon. I hope! I'll check m y email to see if they've sent a tracking number yet. Crossing Fingers!

I agree with the credit card solution- but I think it's too late for me to complain to them either as the pre-order was submitted in June of last year and I think they only allow me to dispute 90 days.

Lesson learned.

I had a similar dahlia experience as brieth95 last year... Longfield dahlias, which came in 3 packs, had some issues.. they looked good from outside the bag, but a lot of necks were snapped. appeared to be rough handling. a handful of the 50 or so arrived with every neck broken. You expect some, but holy cow, when I went back to them the company was superstar customer service/satisfaction, I couldn't have asked for more,

hollandbulb farm, on the other hand sent tubers that you could see through the plastic bags were rotted, smashed and stinking.. A blind man could see, and many of the healthy tubers had been so poorly treated that every neck was not only broken, but dangling like crystals on a chandelier. when I contacted holland bulb farm, first they said I had to send pictures, which I did. then they told me they can't tell from the pictures of rotted mush which dahlia it was and I'd have to take new pictures with the label from the bag, which I also did..with pictures of fungus and mush in their plastic bag, THEN after I had jumped through hours of hoops, they told me to plant them, take pictures of where I planted them and if they didn't grow to my satisfaction "later in the season" I could contact them, but until I gave the the opportunity to grow ( it was oatmeal- no way anything would grow) the guarantee doesn't apply. I literally sent them a picture of black tubers split open with oozing puss gooping out and they said we won't guarantee unless you plant them at the appropriate time and give it the whole summer.. Thumbs down

I did get a great deal, about 33% the price of other retailers, and had about 66% success- so i'm ahead of the game, but I'm working with 3 generations + 40 years experience, a cold frame/unheated greenhouse- I can turn lemons into lemonade.. but if those are their customer service policies.. they should simply say we don't care, we're inexpensive and your on your own..

I remember when some mail order suppliers required you to return the shipping label and the dead plant when requesting a refund. This does not sound any better:)

i have always been wary of certain "bulb" company's and read the reviews first before thinking about buying. Since Longfield is in New Jersey and not that far from me I order first from them because the climate and growing conditions are much the same. It's their job to insure the bulbs and tubers are correctly packaged and that the product is in good condition for planting. So far I've been relatively lucky dealing with them. The dahlia tubers arrived in good health and I was able to plant them without guessing if they would survive. I have suggested Longfield to a few gardeners and they have been satisfied with their orders. This year it's 2 tubers per bag as opposed to 3 per bag last year. I get it. Inflation. But still a good price although 3 made it even more tempting to keep on ordering.

Longfield is a supplier to Costco and I've never had any issues with their bulbs. Think most of their bulbs are imported from the Netherlands.

i have also bought longfield dahlias at costco.. something about the added heavy paper and cardboard packaging for display, they were in great shape had nearly no damage..
however what was labeled as american dawn, a pink/purple decorative all grew as a pure white fimbriatta... I think costco has even better return policy than longfield, but I didn't keep the receipt..

Yes mislabeled bags. My first years trying dahlias I ordered this and got that. That was from Springhill. But their tubers grew well so I let it go. Our summer weather here in Jersey is hazy, hot and humid so I order form Longfield because they get the weather I do.

I feel bad when I hear my fellow gardeners order their choices, but receive a completely different variety from a vendor who has a mission statement proclaiming excellence and a staff of professional horticulturists.
A single mistake, I can understand. However, this problem is repeated across many threads here at NGA.

According to the email the shipment went out via UPS on the 21st. I think it should've been here by now but knowing how ass dragging UPS can be I'll wait another day before getting antsy about it.

email said it was delivered today. Yep there it is on the porch next to the Longfield boxes. Now to open it and see how the roots are. Perfect roots. They're sending out leaves. The roots look and feel plump. I can relax. Next open the Longfield boxes. 3 day lilies and 6 collarette dahlias. Boy I am forgetful. It was a surprise to see what I thought I ordered and what I got. Karma Gold and a Labyrinth variety in peach and gold. Bishop of Llandaff and HS Date. This should be interesting. All the tubers are dry and well packaged. Doesn't seem to be any broken necks.

Indeed! and Longfield did me a favor. I ordered 3 of their "new" day lily-Pink Stripes and they sent me 5. Now to find some weather protection and hopefully plant tomorrow. Chilly and dreary today but 62' for tomorrow with a breeze. I'll have to plan this out before I start digging. There's allot of left over debris in the beds and a quick hand raking will be needed.

1) NEVER trust reviews of a supplier published on their own website; instead search for reviews online. GardenWatchdog on Dave's Garden is very helpful with that.
2) If the site make-up looks like a shopping mall billboard, you can bet your ass they're all bark and no bite.
3) The name. It says 'TulipWorld', but they offer pretty much EVERY plant out there. A Jack-of-all-trades, but master of none.

This is why I prefer smaller, specialized nurseries. Quality over quantity.

We usually buy local only, but Tulip World had a variety of clematis I wanted, and I caved. And stupidly, I did not check their online reviews, which hover around ONE (only because ZERO is not an option). I ordered 2 of the clematis and couple echinacea and Phlox. When the plants finally got here, they were dried up and appeared to be quite dead. I tried planting them right away, and three months later, one clematis has survived, but just barely. It's trying, but is only a couple inches tall. The other plants did not come back to life, so I contacted Tulip World after a couple weeks and sent a picture. They said they send their plants in a "dormant stage", so to give them 6 to 8 weeks to grow. What a line. That "6 to 8 weeks" puts you past their refund policy, as they very well know. Now they are claiming the DOA plants were my fault and I cannot get my money back. They did offer me a TW gift certificate, but I really have no need for more dead plants. Looking at reviews online, I am not the only customer they have cheated; dead plants and refusing refunds seem to be their M.O. So far, I have written reviews on the top sites and BBB, and I have more to do tomorrow. Know that they also operate under other names, such as Holland Bulb Farm and Beautiful Holland Bulbs. According to reviews, they cheat customers under those names, as well. So a big BUYER BEWARE on Tulip World and their aliases; they are shady shady shady! Grumbling
