Very nice collection, Jelinda! Do you find that they are all fragrant? My H.carnosa 'Hindu Rope' wasn't very fragrant at all. In fact it was faintly stinky! To my nose anyway...

I have noticed a lot of people describe the scent of the same plants differently. My DS-70 smelled like butterscotch to me but the hubby didn't think so.I only smelled it when i brought it inside, the others bloomed outside so i couldn't really smell anything from them.I have thought about bring 1 plant inside when it's blooming to see if i can smell it better but never have.I also noticed the smell is the strongest early in the AM & in the evening Shrug!

It amazes me the broad range of experiences with these plants ... I didn't know any carnosa *ever* bloomed. And my multiflora blooms nearly constantly, and has put up with so much abuse, so bizarre that yours croaked, Lin.

Other than the multiflora, my biggest success was lacunosa (not too flashy of flowers, but I loved the scent!). That was in TN, but my friend here in Arizona (who is a terrific plantsman) has never seen his bloom. I'm guessing it's the humidity? We'll see. I got a small one that is literally hanging over the side of my kitchen sink, in order to improve the level of humidity. It's not unusual for Phoenix to run at about 20-30%, or lower.

I also got a "Black Hoya" - Hoya cinnamomifolia var purpureofusca from Almost Eden. Anyone have any experience with this one?
In the end, only kindness matters.

Science is not the answer, it is the question.

Sheryl, can't help with the 'black' hoya but would love to see a picture of it.I absolutely totally agree about the humidity. Here in Ga. humidity is just a given. This summer we had all the rain added to the humidity & i've never had so many Hoya blooming at once.

I am loosing my H. wayetti/kentiana still not sure which it is.I don't know why it's dying but it's on it's way out.I would like to save as much of it as i can.I have only rooted 1 before and i did so by sticking the cutting in some soil,it took a while but finally rooted. It's slowly grown another stem.

Any advice on cutting off any good parts of the stems that are left not dried up & rooting them before the whole plant dies.I would like to get the good stems & then just throw out the rest of the plant.I want to do this soon because of the temp's i have to do this soon.I may try asking the same question on the propagation forum as well to see what i get.I usually find people on a thread for a specific plant will have the most experience though.

Jelinda - I rooted some from my Kentiana in a green house with lights and rooted them in vermiculite. It did take a while, but they did root.

Why do you think your plant is drying up?

I don't know what's wrong with it,i've tried everything i know to do.It started with just a few stems died, they just dried up leaves became crunchy.I removed the bad stems, checked the plant for insects,it hasn't dried out for any length of time i couldn't come up with why some stems had died. Then as time has gone by i've lost more & more of the plant. Now the plant is to far gone, the only thing i know to do is try to save some good stems to root.It was a beautiful plant, bloomed, was with the rest of my hoya's,Rhip's,etc... but this one plant just didn't make it.I don't have a picture of it now.here's the last photo i took of it & it was doing great,i've had it maybe 3 years.

The rest of my Hoya's are doing great!! ???

I'd suggest removing the entire plant from the container and taking a look at the roots. I had a H. wayetti one time that was doing just as you describe. I removed the plant from the pot and it was totally root bound with very little to almost no soil remaining. The plant was totally drying up from the roots upwards! With my growing conditions I found that particular hoya preferred moist soil (but not soggy) at all times.

Here is my hoya Krimson Queen, and there is a carnosa cutting in the same pot. I've had it for two years now.

Thanks Lin! My plant doesn't look nearly as good as your plants. So far I haven't seen any blooms, but it definitely had a major growth spurt this year lol.

I think your plant looks great! I begin feeding my plants in late spring and the carnosa's always bloom during the summer. Maybe you will see blooms on yours next year.

Thanks again Lin. Smiling What type of fertilizer do you use on your hoyas? It would be great if both produced flowers next year.

I use a bloom booster fertilizer 11-25-15 by Better-Gro which is readily available at Home Depot:

http://sunbulb.com/info/?page_...

I have a 5 gal bucket that I fill with water and mix in the fertilizer for my orchids, hoya's and other flowering plants. It calls for 1 teaspoon per gallon of water but I use 1/2 a teaspoon per gallon. I'm bad about staying on a scheduled feeding routine but I do try for once a month during the growing season. Smiling

I have always just used the same 15-30-15 for my blooming plants & of course those that know me know i use super thrive in the water of all waterings, not just when i feed.

Cameron, is that a H. 'chelsea' in the pot with your H.'KQ' ?? They whole pot looks wonderfully happy!!

I don't see Wax Plant (Hoya carnosa 'Chelsea') in that combination planting but it could be the non variegated carnosa in there. At one time I had two plants of 'Chelsea', one got quite large but I could never get them to bloom and I was limited on space so I ended up giving them away after a few years.

Thanks Jojoe! It could be chelsea. I got it as cutting from a friend's plant. I always thought it was carnosa but it definitely looks similar to chelsea. I have some African violet fertilizer that I got from a friend. I think its 12-38-22.
