Gene, Sans. Pinguicula. Walking Sans. is a beauty, now is that also considered a snake plant? It is beautiful and the babies or pups are so adorable. Big Grin

That's the trouble with common names. I have heard of Sans. referred to as Mother in Law plant, Greasy Dinner plant, etc. Gene

Hello everyone. I'm fairly new to these parts. I'm enjoying your sansevieria pictures and sharing very much. I only got my first about a year ago. They are great in the neglect they tolerate (want?). Here are the only two I have for now, but I'm interested in collecting a few more varieties.

Wow, I skimmed through the 24 pages of comments here, and snake plants look really cool in outdoor gardens! I've never actually owned one because I've always leaned towards ferns and shied away from the "Mother In Laws Tongue" because I thought it was a weird name. Does anyone know the history of that name? I'm sure it's an interesting story...

Anyway, I'm thinking they would be worth a try!!

Wickipedia says it is because of it's "sharpness". Another source stated similarly due to the sharpness of its evergreen sword-like leaves. Some mother-in-laws are known for their 'sharpness of tongue'/speech (not me of course Whistling Rolling on the floor laughing Hilarious! )

I'm used to the nickname of Mother-in-Law plant being Diffenbachia. Sap has Oxalic Acid in it. Key ingredient in Barkeeper's Friend cleaner. Removes rust and many stains. If you get some in your mouth your tongue will swell so much you cannot talk. Gene

gasrocks said:Sans. Pinguicula. Walking Sans. Very slow growing plant. General rule in the plant world, the slower it grows the more it costs. Saw a plant on-line the other day that does not put out its 2nd leaf until it is 150 years old. But, I stray. Just I case you have not seen it "pup." Here's 2 different plants that are throwing out pups. They will put their own roots down and then you could separate them from Mom. Both of these I will leave together for now. I have one large pot that has a family of 8 in it. This is probably one of the plants that most impresses visitors. Gene

Lot of species of Sans. put out pups in the air. Here's Sans. Francisii in a 4" pot. I'm willing to bet that there is more variety in the Sans. world than most of you imagined. A good thing. Gene

That S. francisii is one of my favorites. It crawls along the ground.

Here's a nice Sansevieria Schwieinfurthii with leaves coming out of a drain hole. Top of pot to top of leaves is about 3'. Most spears are about 1/2" in diameter. S. Cylindrica (which I have dozens of, some over 40 years old) has faint horizontal banding and the (also cylindrical) spears do get thicker. Gene

Hi everyone!
Laurel I especially like the pot on the left.
So here is one that was growing (and flowering) out the drainhole like gasrocks has. I cut it off and potted it up a month or two ago. I then had to cut off the leaves and put the tripod over it- although it had some roots coiling around the drip pan, when potted it kept falling over due to the weight of the tall leaves. it seems to be stabilizing itself, which I think means it is growing new roots. Cutting through the root was like slicing a potato, and it initially grew some mold until I temporarily washed off the soil and left the cut surface exposed to air for over a week. Now it seems OK.
The last two photos are of seeds forming from my S. cylindrica, which flowered this winter for the first time. I decided to try and pollinate them using a toothpick, and now I have some seeds forming. Does anyone know how to sprout them?

Wait until the seed pods ( I call them berries) turn red. Then plant them as you would any other seed. Gene

I soak mine in warm water with root tone for 24 hrs. Then plant in a take-home container. The ones with black bottom with clear plastic tops. Makes a mini green hosue. Using sandy soil mix. Keep damp not wet. Covered. In two weeks then you can start to leave to top slightly open. When 3" tall, transplant into a gritty fast draining mix in there own pots. This method works for almost all cactus & Succulents.
First you have to make sure they are ripe and cleaned and dried. The berries can contain up to 3 seeds each.

I'm trying to share. I'll post more pix of the interesting and/or different ones but it will take me a while. Without mentioning other succulents, I have presently 109 species of Sans. I do not count plants just pots. Somewhere above 350 of Sans. Gene
